Sink keeps falling down in Topaz Empty Sink keeps falling down in Topaz

Post by Balvenie Sun Apr 26, 2015 2:23 pm

Following lots of help on here about where to put the waste bin in my Topaz, I now have another question - When driving, the sink in the washroom keeps falling down to the "in use" position, usually if the road is bumpy or over speed humps.  Is this common and what do people do to prevent it? I am worried it will eventually damage the pivot points.  There are already some minor cracks.

Grateful for any suggestions!  It is a 2009 model

Might be an idea to get in touch with AS very helpful there with any problems.  I never had that problem with my Topaz.

Curtain wire strap across front near top
Not pretty but it work.
or fit some sort of catch, (same applys)

The sinks have indents in the frame and high spots on the bowl,
to effect a latch but any out of true and down it drops!!
Wedges tend to work themselves free, I think all the drop-down sinks suffer to some degree as can the toilet lid, when up, if not parked correctly though men should really sit in deference to those who do the cleaning. courtesy

I cured that problem in my recently sold Topaz.
I had some sticky-backed foam strip a bit like supersize draught excluder that is used on door frames. Unfortunately, I don't know where you can buy it as someone gave me a roll of it.
I attached a short length (5cm) to the outside of the bowl corners and this created a much tighter fit when I closed it with the result that it never dropped down again.

I fixed mine with a plastic turnbuckle catch from the caravan shop. The catch is screwed above the sink with small self tapping screws and the plate fastened to the sink. It's stayed firm for 25000 miles so far.
You may also need to check the sink back molding is not coming apart. Look in the storage area below the sink and see if the lining has separated from the front and dropped, this can allow the unit to twist and the sink won't stay up.
It's a nuisance re- fixing it and involves removing the narrow rear facing section.
Worth a mention, don't store too much weight and bulk in the cupboard.
Good luck.

Just remembered - I actually fixed the foam strip to the inside of the opening (at the top corners) so that it was not visible and produced a neater job.

Had this problem in an early Topaz. Didn't use wire or tape or extras of any kind. The "catch" is made between the upper edge of the basin (when raised) and the surround. Remove the basin; put a strip of soft plastic (milk carton!) at the bottom of the slots which receive the hinge pins, replace the basin which is now raised and it will engage more positively. Not good enough? Double the thickness, etc, etc.

This looks like a great idea. Unfortunatly mine also needed repairs behind the unit.
I'm a great fan of plastic milk cartons for many uses.

Thanks for all the helpful replies.  Having looked more closely i can see that the moulding that forms the back of the storage area below the sink is not properly connected, it is flopping about: and the "scupper" that the sink drains into is also not firmly fixed, it is only held to the main fascia moulding by a couple of pop rivets.  I cannot believe that this is how autosleeper do it, so suspect a hasty repair by a previous owner.

I think i am going to have to find a way of bonding all these components together (perhaps epoxy resin and tape?) so the the structure becomes stiff again;  in the meantime i will try the strip of plastic milk carton trick!
