Tow Bar Bike rack on Broadway
Hello everyone
We have just changed from a Symbol to a Broadway. Previous owners had a tow bar fitted so we thought we would fit a bike rack on it for our electric bikes. Has anyone got a Thule 949 or similiar? Please let us know how you got on.
Many thanks

Dont know about the Thule but on our last van I used a Whitter tow bar mounted bike rack which quite honestly I preferred to the Fiamma on the current van. I did a bit of a mod to give support to the wheels but found it easier to lift the bikes onto rather than the higher mounted normal bike racks. Would think with your electric bikes that would be a blessing

I've got a Thule 928 and it's very well made. As above, you don't have to lift the bike so far, and you also don't have the worry of the weight of bikes on the doors/tailgate or back panel.
I had to modify the 928 slightly to increase the amount of tilt to allow access into the back of the van, but that's just because my van's got a tailgate which requires more clearance.

I have one, used it on the back of a 4x4 along with a Thule backbox. Very good, took it to the Czech republic and back a few years ago, no problems.
For sale if you are interested, in almost as new condition.

We have a Thule, not sure which model, but its the one for electric bikes. They are very well made. Its very easy to lift the bikes on, I have the optional ramp, but its not really necessary. Only downside is its heavy to lift on the tow ball, locking it in position is a doddle. They take up a bit of storage space in the garage (at home).

Is the Thule 949 not the "easy base" carrier.? I recently purchase a Thule Europower 916 which is the one recommended for the heaviest electric bikes - from memory £149 at Halfords. Not for the motorhome but use it on the back of my old 5 Series BM.
It is a very nice bit of kit with excellent ratchet straps for tie-down, and is fully lockable once on the tow ball. I had slight doubts at first about the tow-ball mounting but the mechanism is adjustable to exert extra pressure on the ball, to prevent slippage.
There is slight flexing fore/aft (along the car's axis) but this could be solved with an additional strap.

Nice looking bit of kit, but I think you'll find the current price is £360.

Correct Brian ..... just found the receipt. Got it for £349 instead of £360 because I ordered it on-line and collected it locally.
Sorry for mistake

No worries Bob, happy to find someone with a memory worse than mine.
Bought a sticker when I got the van, said "On an Adventure before Dementia" - can't find it now

Many thanks to you all for the helpful suggestions. It looks like Thule are a good make of bike carrier which would suit us. Going to find a dealer so we can see the 916 and the 949. Again our thanks for your time.
