Boxer 'Symbol' intermittent start! Empty Boxer 'Symbol' intermittent start!

Post by workshop05 Thu Jan 22, 2015 4:56 pm

I have a problem occasionally with starting. Key just clicks, but won't start. Feels just like a flat battery ,but it's not.
After fiddling around it does start. Just the same hot or cold!
Could it be the starter motor ?
I want to get it sorted while I still have some warranty left.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks. Keith. scratch head

Hi wave

It could be but it’s much more likely to be a loose connection on the battery, starter motor or possibly on an earth strap between the engine and bodywork. The click will be the starter solenoid operating.  A poor connection may well provide enough current for the solenoid but not the much heavier current that the starter motor needs.
The first thing to check is that the battery connectors, the connection on the starter motor and any earth straps (between the engine and bodywork) are very tight. If you can move the connection by hand it’s too loose.
If that doesn’t work and you want some more suggestions on fault finding post again.

It could be the starter solenoid sticking. If it's not too far whack it back under warranty.

I know what you mean Ron, but for just a few brief seconds I was transported back to my soldiering days, "Whacking" a faulty starter motor of an 432 APC, with a 4ft Wrecking Bar, through a very small inspection aperture of the engine compartment!!

Cheers biggrin
