FM Radio Switch Off Empty FM Radio Switch Off

Is it really true that it has been proposed to turn off FM broadcasting of national stations as soon as 2014 . There are still new vehicles being sold with FM radios built in.  Why dispose of all those perfectly good portable FM radios in various rooms of most houses:scratch head:  , what a waste.
Presumably there will be gismo boxes to stick on the windscreen of vehicles (made by workers in the far east) that we will be told will allow us to receive digital signals on our vehicle radios but there is some debate that it will take a good many more years to iron out potential problems.
2014 surely is far too soon and is it all really necessary

Not quite true. Target date 2015 but there are targets to be reached before it can happen such as 50% of listening must be digital, see this article for explanation....
