Advice on Awnings Empty Advice on Awnings

Post by Sonja Thu Jul 18, 2013 9:50 pm

Hi everyone
We need an awning for extra sleeping room (2 berth van but 3 adults + dog to accommodate) - can anyone suggest a suitable option which is not too bulky to transport, for a VW T4 Trophy. There's a Fiamma shade on the van - someone told us you can get something to attach to this - is this a good idea?

Lots of different choices available but we have the Outdoor Revolution Midi. It fits onto the Fiamma via a Kador strip and figure of eight and has an optional inner tent.
With both of us it takes about 20 mins to put up, as long as it isn't windy.
Will try to post a photo for you.

Here's the photo - if the link works OK.

Advice on Awnings Empty Thanks

Post by Sonja Fri Jul 19, 2013 6:15 pm

Hello Ann
Thanks for the info and the pic; a great help. We googled the Outdoor Revolution Midi and found a company which does these and a number of other suitable ones, along with the kador strips etc (never heard of any of this!). Now the fun bit of choosing the one we want ......!

Advice on Awnings Empty Re: Advice on Awnings

Hello, Phil & Sonja

I also own a Trophy and after much reading on this forum and looking around the net I purchased the Khyam auto dome classic.
It is a quick erect dome and after the first couple of outings it can be erected and pegged out by one person in about 15 minutes. It does not have a built in ground sheet and you would need to purchase an inner tent to fit.

What ever one you chose make sure the tunnel that attaches to the van is large enough to allow the door to open without catching the awning, there are a lot of second hand ones out there with the description small rip at tunnel, or words to that effect.

Hope this helps

Advice on Awnings Empty Kyham

I have A Kyham which I always manage to put up myself. The inner tent holds a double blow up bed with space at the end where I put the grandkids cases. Love my awning. Had it a few years now. Kyham are very helpful as well.

Advice on Awnings Empty Kador strip etc

Post by Sonja Sat Jul 20, 2013 6:37 pm

Hello All
Thanks for all your replies and pics. There's something we're a little confused with - the van has a Fiamma and a metal strip underneath it (I think it's called a C-rail?).

1) Which is the best way to attach the awning - the Fiamma or the rail?
2) Do both of these need a Kador strip and figure of 8?
3) Kador strip seems to come in different sizes - one site described how to measure the C-rail with a drill bit and we arrived at 8mm which seems to be bigger than the 6mm max size available
4) The figure of 8 only seems to have 2 sizes - how do we measure for this?

Sorry if we're being a bit dim, not having done this before! scratch head

Hi Sonja
If you have a Fiamma awning then see my post in this link. This is the best method we have found for keep the tunnel onto a van conversion.

Advice on Awnings Empty Movelite

Post by shelldrake Sat Jul 20, 2013 10:07 pm

we have recently purchased a Movelite Pro Carbon drive away awning and am very pleased with it.
we have three throw over straps which I prefer so that I can drive away if necessary.
Do you research as a caravan company here in the SW wanted £450 and I bought it on e bay for £230.
