Do you have much mechanical know how?
I don't have much to do with cars yet(mechanically) I'm more of a bike person.
The alternator on my bike has just burned out and costs about £500 for a new stator assembly but I have sent it to a guy in Devon for a re-wind that will cost £45.
If you want to give him a call to see if he can help I'll PM his number for you.

Do you have a local auto electrician? If you have , they should be able to rebuild it but if not I find Europarts as competitive as anyone. Just had a quick look (not knowing your exact vehicle) at Trafic alternators and they range from around £60 to £140...

Depends what's wrong with it, 9 times our of 10 it's just the brush&regulator pack.
As Paul says, try an auto-electrician, look in the yellow pages.
