Hi,
An alternator has an internal "switch" which controls the charge indicator light, you should also check the amperage being delivered to ensure that all is well,

The current needs to be checked. It’s quite possible for the alternator to supply close to normal voltage with low load but die when loaded. As a very rough check run the headlamps for five minutes or so with the engine off - then start the engine and see if the volts go up to 13V or more (it may take a few minutes ).
On most of the alternators I’ve seen the lamp has been connected to the rotor winding (the internal wiring that generates the magnetic field). The lamp coming on means little or no voltage is being supplied to this winding, which will in turn will mean low current capability.
