RAC Euro Breakdown Insurance.
We are in the process of purchasing a Topaz and I'm going through all the admin needed to line up the bits of paperwork! Currently we have RAC family membership, which includes European cover for myself, wife, son and daughter and any of our cars, any number of trips. Looking thro' all the info I have from the RAC at one point it says that commercial vehicles are not covered but nothing more specific than that.
A call to the "laddie" at the RAC and he tells me that they cover vehicles up to 5m length and 3.5t weight; although he did say that they have a scheme with the Camping and Carvanning Club covering larger vehicles, this is obviously not applicable to the Topaz.
Has anyone here actually used the RAC Euro cover (or UK cover, for that matter) in connection with their "van"?
Cheers,
Pete.

If you are in the C&CC the RAC scheme would be fine for the Topaz
Who have you or are you going to insure the van with - Most insurance companies offer breakdown cover for the uk and europe (Caravan Clubs Mayday is UK only)
ie: Safeguard - AA, Comfort - RAC (I think) and the others use various schemes

Yes, I understand that the C&CC arrangement with the RAC would be fine, however I'm not, at the moment, intending to join the C&CC.
I'm probably going to insure insure the van with Caravan Guard; their quotation did include an amount for UK breakdown but I understand I can decline that bit of the package. They impressed me with their specialist knowledge; currently we are with Direct Line and whilst they know what our VW Polo is, they were completely baffled by a VW T5 Topaz (as one would expect); the young lady said she could "refer to under-writers" but whatever price they came up with, they could not provide any cover for contents. No sale!
So, rephrasing my question a little better: is there anyone here who has experience of RAC Euro cover, who is not a member of the C&CC Arrive scheme?

Er .......... as I haven't bothered with ANY form of breakdown cover for the last twenty five years "No!" : but may I ask that you consider saving your money and not bothering?
Check out the Members Poll on Breakdown Cover. It makes interesting reading!
Best regards,

Dutto, for reasons which are more than apparent from my other recent posts, I would certainly not recommend not having European breakdown cover.
Peter,
Reinforcing what Roger has said, inclusion of breakdown cover with motor insurance is not limited to the Camping and Caravanning Club schemes. The two historically most prominent specialist motorhome insurers, Safeguard and Comfort, include European breakdown cover. In fact time was that you could not get insurance from them without such cover - I assume this remains the situation?
I've been with Safeguard on and off for years, even though as a family we carry RAC cover for our day to day vehicles. Not only is it convenient, I think it is ecomonically the best way rather than arranging your own separate cover or the various extensions to your existing cover. There's also no doubt that it covers the type of vehicle you are operating. Peace of mind is important when you're on holiday so why skimp on not having any cover. How much does it cost to be towed of an autoroute/autobahn/autostrada?

Hi there,
"Peace of mind" comes at such a high price it would stop me from sleeping at nights! Please check out the Poll.
Best regards,
Ian

Where is the pole? ;-)
Thanks for your responses; where would I find that poll?
I really did look for it but could not readily see it; sorry.

Peter,
It is here:

I found the Poll and the results extraordinary!
Bear in mind that the cost I used was just for UK cover for a car.
Best regards,
Ian
