Hi there. We love our Duetto but find that the engine is very noisy, even if our radio was working we would not be able to hear it. Has anyone had the same problem, and can they suggest which is the best way to sort it. I think that it was fitted with somekind of soundproofing but this has disintegrated over the years. I have been on the website for Noise Killers and they have Engine Blankets, just wondering if this would do the trick.

Hi Hilda,
I have known of noise killer for quite a few years and I believe them to be experienced and reputable, give them a ring and ask thier advice, you cant do any harm.

This seems to be one of the things that Ford improved in the later years of the Mk5, with more robust soundproofing under the bonnet and also on the cab floor and inside of the bulkhead.

One other thing that can make them more noisy than usual is if there are any rust holes in the inner wings, which can sometimes be found hiding under the vestiges of the engine bay soundproofing!

I used a noise killers kit on a Talbot Talisman diesel about 10 years back. It included an engine blanket and things like sound deadening pads to stick behind door panels and on the engine bulkhead. It was reasonably easy to apply and did quieten things down a bit. After we fitted it we could actually have a conversation at motorway speed! up!

Just thought I would post an up to date reply on this. My partner has just put some soundproofing he got a few months ago, so hopefully this will improve the noise level. Keep fingers crossed. up!

Have just purchased some soundproofing for our duetto, spent the day cleaning out the old stuff.
Filled some gaps in the bulkhead. Tomorrow will fit some sticky backed engine bay insulation on the engine side and felt wadding in the cab side.

Hi,
In the mid nineties I had a new service van and found it to be much noisier than the van it replaced. I discovered that Ford had stopped fitting noise proofing claiming it was a fire hazard. The new van was so noisy I resorted to putting underlay under the cab mats and anything else I could think of but it was definitely a retrograde step as far as fords were concened,

The stuff we purchased was this

Cleaned out all the old stuff and sealed any holeswith foam, unscrewed all the plastic clipsand fixed against the bulkheadin about 6 seperate pannels cut with scissors. Replaced all clips this size did not do all of the bulkhead but about 90 percent of it. Did not go right to the bottom as did not trust the glue without some mechanical support. Has made a huge difference inside the cabin, will be doing iside the bulkhead and floor later. Will be at peterborough tomorrow if anyone wants a look.

A lot of sound is transmitted through the panels 'drumming'. This is usually solved by sticking a damping material to the panels. It doesn't need to cover the whole area, just sticking pads in the right place makes a massive difference. Of course a 'blanket' type cover will help, but the scientific approach is more effective.

If you look inside a modern washing machine, you will often see a thick rubbery tape a couple of inches wide stuck across a panel, which just damps the sound and makes a massive difference. You will probably find the same inside your door panels etc.

When fitting any form of sound insulation inside the engine bay you should ensure it is fire resistant / proof. Inside the cabin is obviously less of an issue.

An extra layer of carpet is cheap and easy.
