Secret Code
A job I've been meaning to do for............well ages!
Washing and cleaning the roof.
Now, I have cleaned it before (well once or twice), but only noticed today that somebody (I presume AS) has etched a code into the grp next to the toilet vent.
I am wondering if it could be initials of an AS worker?
Anybody got any ideas...................or will it remain a secret!

Remember them well.
Had a fleet of them in SF Garage (if you know LT codes)
We called them Daimler MS's (because we didin't know what the M or S stood for!)
We called them other names as well!!

On the other hand, to quote Noel Coward ........ and knowing that it is Off-Topic and should be in Poetry Corner:
"He has no enemies, but is intensely disliked by his friends.”

Re: Secret Code
Slightly off topic..........one of the last Hillman Avengers built in Ryton before the production moved north to Linwood came into our garage under warranty for a persistent body rattle . We just couldn't get to the bottom of it but the noise appeared to be inside a chassis leg.
We got permission from the then Chrysler factory to open up the chassis leg and found a 7/8 nut rattling around inside and a felt tip pen message "UP YOU YOU SCOTCH "!
Needless to say the customer got a new car......................

Re: Secret Code
Way off topic but .... can't resist.
We were Cadets on the SS Domino in 1960 when the 3rd Mate started throwing his weight around.
My mate came up with the idea of putting two small ball-bearings at the back of the ship's technical drawing so that they rolled and went "click-click" every time the ship rolled.
The 3rd Mates bunk was on the other side of the bulkhead!
Three days later he said "I know you two did it. I can't find it. Please remove it."
He was a pleasure to work with after that!
Best regards,

Sorry, still off topic, I complained to Walkers Crisps about when of their adverts showing an RM being de-roofed under a low bridge as 'heritage vandalism'- they pulled the advert !!! grrrrrrrrr

Re: Secret Code
Well, they are my initials as well, but honest Guv, it wasn't me.
Off topic again (sorry, but this has been a really good thread) - I was reminded last week by a seafaring colleague of when person or persons unknown sprinkled sugar in the bed of a fat and utterly loathed engineering cadet when we were both at sea.
Still want to know why the initials, though. None on mine that I have seen..... There you are, nicely back on topic so I won't be in the naughty corner.

Hi there,
Not wishing to be castigated (if that's the word!) by "Admin" I have opened up a thread on "Fun" titled "When we were young and stupid!" rather than give my own Engineer tale!.

Re: Secret Code
Well, I have not been on here for a long time, so my first post on coming back had better be proper! But then I'm a female - and we never go off topic, much too sensible
Just a thought, but could it be the initials of something located in that spot immediately behind the initials, to show where it is? Kind of retrofit indicator in case you need to find it from the inside, or not drill into it.
See, us girls can be technical too

Good idea Vardy, but I don't think so.
We bought the 'van' brand new so I expect these initials have been there since day one. (unless someones crept up there in the meantime!)
My view is that they are the initials of an A/S worker.......maybe the person who fitted the hi-top.
Anyone else with a Harmony or similar, could they 'pop' up a ladder and have a look at their roof?

Mine's a Harmony but it's so old the initials probably stand for "Dinosaur Marking System".

secret codes
My Harmony is in the garage at present for an MOT and a 'damn good seeing to' service (more of which later in the week as a new topic- the bill is up to £600+ at the moment), when it comes back I'll have a look.
I don't remember seeing anything when we had her the first time round (1999-2002) when I did fall off a ladder during a roof cleaning session !
It will have to wait until Mrs H is at her Day Centre as I'm now banned from climbing ladders when she's here- it'll be our secret !
At least our current driveway is level unlike the last one ..............

I've just had an idea, it might be the initials of a previous owner/s put there as an identifier should the van get stolen, the V5 might help but a V888 to the DVLA (£5 fee) will get you a list of all previous owners.
I put a 9" adhesive number plate on my roof for that purpose back in '99, it was still there when we got the Harmony back in 2011.

That's intriguing - was it stolen and returned all that time later?
