Symbol radio
Hi all.
I have a 2013 symbol which I purchased last year, the head unit is basic ( no Bluetooth, dab+ and very flaky ipod connection).
So has anyone changed their head unit for an up to date unit that has dab+, Bluetooth and a USB connection for my ipod, also Android auto and Apple play.
Thanks in advance.
Alan

Yes, I have changed the factory set in our kingham to an Alpine X903D-DU2, great improvement but expensive!!

One further thing to bear in mind: if the factory radio is CANbus operated, you will probably find no ignition-switched supply at the back of it, and an aftermarket radio will almost certainly need one. If you don't address this, you are likely to find that the new radio runs your vehicle battery down! Often people only discover this in winter...

I believe the Alpine ones support CANBUS, perhaps others do too. They come with a wiring harness and are compatible with steering wheel controls and phone functionality. I was looking at this one as I don't like giant screens in vehicles but I would like CarPlay. It's about £400.

One thing you might lose though is access to the vehicle settings and trip computer displays that you get within the standard head unit.

A 2013 factory headunit almost certainly will, but if you are in any doubt, look at the wiring on the back. If it supports CANbus natively (i.e. internally, as opposed to having an external adaptor box) then it will have a CAN high and a CAN low connection on the back.

2013 vehicle so I won't expect Cambus issues. Take the opportunity to run a feed wire from the leisure batteries and remove any worries about starting the engine. I also fitted an isolating switch to prevent Draw from the maintenance function flattening the battery when not in use.Roopert wrote:One further thing to bear in mind: if the factory radio is CANbus operated, you will probably find no ignition-switched supply at the back of it, and an aftermarket radio will almost certainly need one. It'll vary a lot from make to make, but CANBUS was common from the early 2000's. Our 2006 T5 has a CAN-operated factory headunit, and no ignition-switched supply.
