Gear box Repair Peugot Boxer Symbol
Ive had my Peugeot Boxer Symbol for the last 6 years and had many great holidays in it ..
However in 2018 the gear started meshing between second and third shift. I took it to Bexhill Gearbox garage for repair in 2018. That cost me £1500.00
2 year warranty or 25,000 miles which ever the sooner. Sadly its starting "to Catch" again when moving from second to third. Every other gear change is fine. ( 5 gears)
In view of that experience (I've only done about 8,000 miles) I would prefer to get a second hand gear box rather than having the Gear Box refurbished again. However it seems that these gear Box's are very hard to find unless a scrap yard has one. I'm surprised that my 20 year old Camper-van is no longer supported with available new gear boxes.
So my request to my fellow Symbol users is do you have any idea where I might find a replacement gear box. Alternatively any recommendations for a gearbox Repairer since I'm disappointed with the last effort at Bexhill.

Maybe a long way from where you are, but these guys repaired my gearbox 5 years & 35,000 miles ago. Cost was £1100 which included fitting a new clutch. This problem only happens if the gearbox has run low on oil, which can happen if the drive shafts have to be removed & the oil isn't topped up afterwards. ( Such as replacing a CV joint gaiter). Done nearly 100,000 miles in our van over the years, it's a 2006 2.2 hdi symbol es.

Re: Gear box Repair Peugot Boxer Symbol
Hi Kevin,
I had the same problem (crunching gear changes) a couple of years ago with my 2001 1.9TD Symbol with 104,000 miles on the clock.
As you have found, the options are limited. My local gearbox repairers all said they could not get the parts –they can get the sycro rings but not the gears which have a coated cone on one side that forms part of the syncro mechanism. If just the rings are replaced the repair will fail after a while, possibly a very short while.
Second hand boxes are likely to have come from a commercial vehicle that has covered a lot of miles and are therefore probably a problem waiting to happen. I found refurbished boxes looked highly dubious/risky (possibly a used box that has just been cleaned and spray painted to make it look good).
I discovered there are just a handful of specialists throughout the whole of the UK who appear to be able to properly rebuild these boxes and some want the box (out of the vehicle) delivered to them. Not easy unless you can remove the box yourself and you then have to keep your fingers crossed when you refit it that they have done a good job.
Instead I took my van to Gloucester Road Gearboxes in Bristol who provide a complete service – remove the box, do a complete rebuild, replace the box and fully test drive it. They replace all the gears, syncro rings, bearings, bushes, seals etc. just about everything inside the casing- which incidentally you cannot get replaced. It isn’t cheap around £2500 but they seem to do a good job – took two days – and mine now runs like a dream. If you decide to give them a call Tel: 0117 954 1424, ask to speak to Dean or Leigh, they are really helpful and will explain exactly what they do. They are a true gearbox specialist and evidently do lots of these boxes.
Having said all this, if you have only done 8,000 miles (even though it may be more than 2 years – you did not say), you could contact Bexhill, if you haven’t already, and argue that if they offer a 25,000 mile warranty, then they obviously expect their work to be good for that mileage and not just 8,000 –especially as it has developed a mechanical problem that is usually mileage rather than time related, unlike say a leaking seal (they know a motorhome is unlikely to cover a huge mileage in two years). See if they will do it under warranty anyway. The fact is that where ever you get the work done the parts that are used will almost certainly be after market ones and these will inevitably be more prone to unexpected, but hopefully still rare, early failure compared to the OEM ones and whoever has done the work should be understanding of this.
Hope the above is of some help. Good luck.

Symbol gearbox repairs.
Dear Micky,
Thank you so much for your detailed response which is much appreciated.
I'm leasing with a local garage in Chichester ( not far from where I live) who have a relationship with Bexhill Gearboxes Ltd I'm hoping they will consider my grievance about gearbox failing again within 8k miles, and see if I can get a discount. Interesting comments about checking oil in the gearbox since that is what Everymans garage will do before sending off for repair.
Have a great Christmas and happy camping next year.
Kind regards
Kevin
