Bike rack for Topaz
Hoping to purchase a Topaz having just sold Clubman with a bike rack. Wondering if anyone has a bike rack on a Topaz and how they have done it. Not sure if you can even fit a Fiamma to the back door because it opens upward. Or would a better option be a tow hook and fitting on that. But then how easy to open back door, or maybe you don't need to open rear door much. Only need to transport one bike and not all the time. Any help much appreciated

Re: Bike rack for Topaz
Having just had a look at a Topaz, it seems to me that with a bit of thought and care a bike could go inside it for travel.
Simplicity
Only bike weight
No extra van length
No rack to buy
Bike hidden when parked, at, say a supermarket
Simple plate fitted to shower tray for one wheel, couple of hooks for small cargo straps in floor
No towbar to buy/fit.
I could go on!!!!

Good answer IanH! For the number of times I travel with it that is probably a very good choice to start with

I fitted a bike rack to our Topaz when we owned it. With 1 bike you may be ok, but I had to fit heavy duty struts to the door as the ordinary ones would not hold it open.

Re: Bike rack for Topaz
Fiamma make a rack specifically for the VW T4/5/6 range. It's simple to fit and has the advantage of transferring almost all the weight to the rear bumper. The hatch can be opened normally when no bike is loaded. The gas struts will hold the hatch open, but may need a little aid to rise in cold weather. It is not possible to open the hatch more than a couple of inches with a bike on board as the bike fouls the bodywork adjacent to the hinges.

Re: Bike rack for Topaz
We have a Topaz and it came with a tow bar. A friend gave us a Witter tow bar bicycle carrier. I find this is excellent because: low loading height, really quick to load and remove from the tow ball. Having lifted bicycles onto the roof or a high mount rear rack on various cars and faffed around getting them secure, this solution is the best IMO
