Damaged upholstery
Mice have gained entry to our treasured old campervan and chewed the upholstery. It's a 1995 van conversion with the original characteristic covers on the seats. Can anyone give me advice regarding getting it mended or replaced?

Re: Damaged upholstery
Getting it done professionally won't be cheap, I'm sorry to say. There are several firms that specialise in Motorhome retrimming such as Regal, but you may find that you can't justify the cost on a van of that age. IIRC we paid more than £2k to have our Trooper reupholstered.
However, it may be worth speaking to a local furniture upholsterer, because they will probably be able to do it if you take the seats out and put them back yourself.

Thank you. That is disappointing news, but very helpful. I will try some upholsterers.

Helen,
Are you any good at sewing?, as reupholstered is pretty straight forward, I have done two MH`s I can help if you want me to, pointers as you are too far away from me, unless you want to come over here.
One I did is my Topaz, similar layout to your Harmony, I bought the material from Auto sleepers upholsteries, or can be cheaper elsewhere, if you get some that you like.
Best regards,
Margaret

Bit after the event now but you don't want it happening again, or, even worse, under the bonnet, so here's from a recent similar post.....

You need 2, one under the bonnet, mines double side taped to the fuse box lid, other anywhere inside the habitation.
Check often for the flashing light, the only way you'll know they're working.

Re: Damaged upholstery
That's really kind of you Margaret. I think I shall have to try doing something myself, but it is not going to be easy. I may have to consider taking fabric off the back of the seats and using that for the front repair, then using a different fabric for the backs.

Re: Damaged upholstery
We had a mouse attack in our Topaz a few years ago and I chose a local upholsterer to do the repairs. They quoted £100 to take away the items that I'd removed for repair. That also involved taking off the back from one backrest to use elsewhere and replacing that with a plain black fabric. The results were quite satisfactory.
I'd tried to obtain some of the similar upholstery fabric but could not find any as it was about 12 years since the van was built. I decided a complete re-upholstery in different fabric would not warrant the expense.
On the deterrent aspect, I've found the plug-in sonic devices of no use. I've caught mice in the traps despite the sonic deterrent being switched on.
My best success at deterring the pests has been peppermint oil. I put an absorbent layer of cloth or sponge on a small shallow plastic tray and add perhaps 20 drops of oil, placing this beneath the bench seat, out of the way. No mouse has been caught in the traps while that tray has been in place. The peppermint oil is easily obtained from hardware shops for a couple of pounds and last for a few years.

Re: Damaged upholstery
Thank you ssjohnl. That is very interesting regarding the peppermint oil. I will give it a try. I think I will have to try to use the fabric from the back of the seats to attempt a repair, thought the mice have damaged some of the backs as well, so there may not be enough. i may try some campervan breakers to see if I can get some more matching fabric. it seems to be a common Autosleeper fabric for this age of van.

Re: Damaged upholstery
There is a Symphony of similar age being broken by this ebay seller, maybe worth contacting to find out if he's prepared to remove fabric ...
