Using Fridge when out for a Day
Just wanted some advice on what to do with keeping the Fridge cold when we go off site for a Day visit somewhere.
During driving the Fridge is powered up, but if we are off site all day is it best to switch to gas when parked up, or just leave the fridge off to stay reasonably cold during the day ?

Re: Using Fridge when out for a Day
I do a lot of off grid camping and the fridge is left on gas from the moment we park up on site till the day we leave, it doesn’t use much gas at all.
Personally I would just put it on gas but bottles of frozen water etc… will keep it cold if just for the day with the fridge switched off.
Getting the fridge cold by sticking the van on EHU the night before is a good idea if possible.

Personally for any time up to 3 or 4 hours (dependent on ambient temp) I'd just leave it off but longer than that I'd run it on gas.

I don't bother putting the gas on any more when just going out for the day and I take a flask with hot tea
You could put a cold block from the freezer in as you might a coolbox and it should keep your picnic things cold.

Re: Using Fridge when out for a Day
Agreed: fridge hardly uses any gas. For a day trip - when contents of fridge is minimal (possibly milk, salad / stuff for lunch / cokes etc) - we don't bother to cool down by electricity the preceding night, but simply go that morning, having loaded the fridge from the house fridge just before departure. The fridge will remain off, and that seems fine.
On hot days, or days when we want 2 meals etc, we set the fridge to Auto (which gives 12v when engine running, and switches to gas when engine off.). Gas usage is minimal.

We leave one of those frozen blue blocks in the freezer compartment at all times. If we're parked up for 3 or 4 hours we never bother switching to gas, the fridge stays cold enough even in hot weather if there's no one opening the door.

Gas, on 3 of 5 setting, only off when moving or on EHU

Thanks all. Useful info, and will use frozen Blue blocks as we have some of these spare.

Re: Using Fridge when out for a Day
Gas has to be switched off on ferries, and the longest crossing I've been on with the van has lasted 8hrs. At the end of that sailing the blue block was still frozen even though vehicle deck was sweltering. So it should be fine to leave for an afternoon of sightseeing.

Re: Using Fridge when out for a Day
We find the fridge stays perfectly cold when left for a day. If we're at all unsure (on a really hot day, or if there's something critical in the fridge ie chicken) we'll light the gas - but the van has to be level, and its important to remember to turn it back to 12v when moving off.
