Pretty much every "out and return" fuel system (i.e. almost every injection system in current production) needs a fuel cooler, because the fuel circulates repeatedly above or within the engine, whether the fuel is being used or not. Each time it circulates it gains heat. My 1986 XJ12 has a fuel cooler which incorporates a loop from the aircon system, and, believe me, it needs it!

My MK7 Transit had a factory fit fuel cooler. It was considerably smaller and neater looking than Alan Cope's version. It took the form of a small finned radiator mounted under the van in about the middle. I was never sure just how necessary it was, but I never had the fuel boil!
