Interested in van-base Autosleepers with LPG
Hi all,
At the moment I'm looking for the 'perfect campervan'
to cover:
- being a daily driver
- not much more than 5m long, if not below
- toilet/shower
The Auto-sleepers Harmony looks great, for example.
I'm interested in a petrol version, and getting an LPG conversion to bring down the costs.
I can't seem to find very many references to such a thing being done with these campervans. Is there a reason for that?
Also, I don't suppose there's somewhere that has all the specifications for the different Autosleepers in one place?

I suspect that the main reason is that there are not many petrol-engined vans on the market, and motorhome owners tend to do relatively low mileage (compared with standard white vans) so LPG conversions simply don't cost in for most of the few that do exist.

I have a 1993 VW Clubman with the 1968cc petrol engine converted to Autogas some years ago. I had it checked and serviced by a company in Boston, Lincs, that specialise in Autogas conversions and also Jaguar cars which is useful as I have one. They are very knowledgeable and got mine running beautifully when I bought it last year inspite of it not being used on gas for the previous 3 years at least. They also replaced the petrol/gas changeover switch a few weeks ago and reprogrammed the ICU for me at a cost of £50.
I rang them a few minutes ago to ask about converting a petrol van to autogas and they told me that any 4 cylinder petrol engine was straight forward to convert and they would expect the cost to be £1400-£1500 including VAT. If you are doing a reasonable annual mileage I don't think it would take that long to recover the cost with gas costing 57.9p per litre in my area and most other areas between 57p and 69p. There may be a slight increase in consumption over petrol, and on mine it drops from around 22mpg on petrol to about 21mpg on gas. Not enough to make any noticeable difference.
Comparing the cost to diesel would equate to about 45+mpg, although a van getting a higher petrol mpg than mine would be even more economical.

Thanks very much to you both.
That's what I thought, it does seem like the majority of the Autosleepers are diesel. Thanks for the recommendation Roger.
I'll have a think about whether what I'm after is actually a bit strange!

Very Strange, why would anyone want a motorhome where you don't need to constantly change gear and runs on fuel costing half the cost of anything else with less emissions?booms81 wrote:
