Symbol chassis rust
Hi guys. After purchasing my 2001 moho 11 months ago from a dealer I've' put it in for it's MOT early. Its failed with awful rust and corrosion of the chassis. Previous advisories were supposed to have been done as advised by the dealer and a clean MOT issued. We paid a lot of money for this vehicle as it was from a dealer. Any advice on getting this vehicle fixed or I will loose my 17k investment

Re: Symbol chassis rust
You won't like this but an MOT means the vehicle was roadworthy on the day of the test, it could be unroadworthy the very next day. Proving that anything was untoward 11 months later will be impossible.
If you tell us the exact reasons for failure as on the fail certificate, we may be able to give advice.

With Paul there, advice easier with a little more detail, most things are fixable with the right approach so don't panic just yet.

Hi
Just another thought did you pay any of the purchase price or deposit with a credit card over £100 as you get consumer protection for the first 12 months not sure of the exact detail but it is something else to explore As Paul says with the MOT it is only technically valid on the day it was issued but if you suspect fraud I would contact MOT standards it is either the DVLA or VOSA.
regards

Re: Symbol chassis rust
We have decided to get it inspected on Wednesday. We are prepared to spend a couple of grand on it to put it right as we want to keep it for many years yet. We just need to find someone suitable in Essex to do a specialist job. Any advice would be much appreciated. The rest of the vehicle is immaculate inside and out

Ok guys just looked at the history of the MOT. From the dealer last year it had a clean MOT with no advisories. Now 2k it has tge exact same failures that were advisories on the previous mot. Something isn't adding up here

Re: Symbol chassis rust
Advisories are just that .It sounds like the last MOT station was dishonest in favour of the dealer but unfortunately buyer beware will prevail. I would take it to a classic car repair workshop and ask their opinion. Unfortunately this is a very common situation on motorhomes as they are not as well protected as cars. If you are going to keep it get repaired thoroughly, not cheaply and then get it treated properly like it should have been from the factory. It will be expensive but your chassis will end up better than new.

Thank you. Unfortunately the MOT testing station is owned by the dealer. We are happy to get it done properly

Re: Symbol chassis rust
My 2002 Peugeot Boxer failed its MOT this year due to rust, despite nothing showing up in advisories previously. No structural components were corroded but any rust within 30cm of prescribed areas (e.g. brakes, steering, suspension, seat belt mountings etc.) is an automatic fail. A local garage with welding facilities was able to remedy mine and the cost was below £300, much less than I had initially expected when I received the failure report.

Rosie. That's really disgraceful and a blatent conflict of interest. If they have an MOT station they have no excuse for not inspecting their vehicles properly. I would report them to trading standards. I don't think you will have much joy from your efforts but businesses should not behave like this.

I would certainly go to trading standards and see what they say, I believe you have a good case.

Re: Symbol chassis rust
It's worth a try but i'm afraid it's probably a long shot. According to the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) which examine such cases, you need to file a complaint within 3 months of the test if a corrosion related issue.fenderbender wrote:I would certainly go to trading standards and see what they say, I believe you have a good case.
