Electric heater in R Reg Trident
Can anyone suggest a heater that will take the chill off the camper van at night (I don't like to use the gas fan heater) that will not trip the system. A small oil filled radiator trips everything. I have ordered a Quest Quartz heater 400-800w. I am not electrically minded!!! Would appreciate some advice. I have recently had the electrics sorted and the one aim was so that when attached to mains I could keep myself warm at night with a heater.

A 500W oil filled radiator will draw just over 2A at 230v and should not trip anything.
It is a far safer solution than the radiant fire you have ordered (the light from the filaments in the radiant heater may also annoy).
It has been known for the oil filled heaters to leak oil so standing on a metal tray is recommended although I've been using them for 15 years each winter with no such problem.

Can you suggest why it it tripping everything? We also have a caravan and have a 'proper' socket in the garage into which I attached the cable to the camper last night. The electric box in the van tripped as did everything in the garage. Could it just be that I am overloading the garage fuses? Up to now to keep the van warm I have attached an extension cable from the garage to the van and just used this. It works well but obviously on hook up I can't to this. There are a lot of electrics in the garage, a fridge, a small freezer and the electric doors (2) and then the two outdoor lights come on when it is dark. Maybe I should cancel the other heater?

What power figure is printed on the heater ?India Hannaford wrote:Can you suggest why it it tripping everything? If it is less than about 2400Watts (10 Amps), then it should not be tripping anything.
(I'm assuming that the circuit breakers in the van are 10 Amp.)
Which breaker is tripping (the one in the van, or the one in the garage/house that the hook up cable is connected to) ?

There must be a fault with the 230v electrical installation or one of the items of 230v electrical apparatus in the van. I hesitate to give you guidance as to how to locate the fault as it could be that the 230v live is being connected to the chassis of the van and I may put you in harm. I recommend you have a qualified electrical engineer test your installation and the hook up cable.

Re: Electric heater in R Reg Trident
everything is tripping - i attached the cable to the outside sockets and tripped all the sockets in the house!!! At the moment I feel like giving up on the Trident and booking hotels. I am sure I will feel differently when it warms up. I suppose I have been spoiled by the new caravan although we had a problem with the blow air heating in the Bailey Phoenix we took delivery of recently as the holes were too small in the system and the heat didn't reach the bedroom area and it was so cold. Solved by Ladybailey fitting discs with larger holes, I cannot believe they had not done this before we took delivery.

WELL .... I know now why everything was tripping the crap job that the auto electric did on the 240v. He had sorted out the 12v system last year and should have admitted that he could not sort the hook up. Apparently the van could have caught on fire as he had done such an awful job. Sorted by the wonderful Martin of Beesmart in Telford, cannot recommend him enough. Heater now working, oil filled small radiator, and I have a small cheap fan heater from Homebase for instant heat. Very happy!!!

I'm so pleased you took it to a competent person to repair, my current (no pun intended) heart condition means that the electric shocks I suffered when a youngster would now prove fatal!!

Peter - it was absolute luck as I had been to a caravan place to purchase some more camping gaz and had said that I was totally fed up that the hook up was not working and they said you must go and see Martin. Now this was a Saturday morning and I didn't have an appointment, He was BRILLIANT and changed the battery charger too which apparently had had it. He charged me £246 that included the part. I thought that was very reasonable and I will travel the four hours from Newmarket to Telford for any future work that needs doing. Martin at Beesmart.

Likewise very pleased for you and albeit frustrating at the time, the constant tripping probably protected your van from fire and at the same time, likely saved your life. Regards.

Paramedic - A very scary thought. To think also he was returning with another box, replacing the cable (all of which were fine) it was his wiring. He very quickly got off the phone when I cancelled the appointment and he asked me what had been the problem. When I said the wiring and if he would like to know what the problem was he could ring the company that fixed it he didn't want to know surprise surprise
