Grand Prix Boredom Empty Grand Prix Boredom

Post by Hubert Sun Sep 16, 2018 3:10 pm

Just watched what must have been the most boring formula one race.
On the street circuits, they have become processional parade laps.
When the commentators and the directors are having to get excited about cars battling for 15th position, you know something needs to change.

Bring back the old days, when drivers had no radio, no electronics, no blue flags etc.

Not the most fun I've had on a Sunday afternoon! Would have been better on Sky (I don't have Sky smile! )

Was a bit boring but I think Monaco is more boring. But Lewis won.

I personally enjoyed it as I have done most of them since I first had control of my own TV in 1974.

I had volunteered to forgo this one live as a few days ago, good weather was forecast for today. As it happens we can only see blurred ferries out of the windscreen through the rain on Mull.

The nail in the coffin of formula one for me was when they started saying that a driver had overtaken another after the other had pulled in for a pit stop. (It was already losing it’s appeal)

Touring car championship was on later, much more exciting!  I just record the GP now and fast forward through to the interesting bits!

Mind you Formula E is even more boring as far as I am concerned.

I've followed F1 for more years than I care to remember. Even going to the Hungarian round when we were touring that country. But in recent years it's lost it's appeal to me, as Hubert says, it's become little more than a procession.
As this is the last year it's going to be shown on free-to-air TV and I don't have Sky TV, that'll be it for me.

Watched the Highlights last night (didn't see many) says a lots when the commentators get excided about a change to the TYRES next year.
Yes not as good as it use to be but that track (infact any road track) should be taken out of the programme, they are not wide enough for passing safely

Anyway shortly afterwards on Sky came highlights of World Superbikes followed by British Superbikes no messing around here, and only time they overtake is with pit stop decisions not in question

So it's Sky only a year later then in 2020? Highlights are all very well, but unless you lock yourself away for hours, the result is usually known beforehand. Like watching the Titanic movie and hoping it might end differently..
Whatever, my interest has waned already.
As has been said, MotoGP has far more excitement.

I've followed GP racing since the late 60s and still watch it out of "brand loyalty" but the reality is, I can't remember many seasons that have been exciting. There have been a few races that stick in the mind but not many seasons. Since the cars have become safe there has not been the turn over of talent and since they have become reliable the result is pretty much fixed once qualifying is over.

Ever since I started watching it was clear that the better racing has always been in the "lesser" classes. IN much the same way that you are just as likely to see a good non-league football match than a league match. Less talent but much more passion.

That will be OK for me.
Cut out the boring follow my leader laps.
Not happy with the quality of the comments. for instance this Singers event, nothing said about Bottas and lack  of movement to attack Verstatan. Remember Hammy was lapping at a reduced rate. Did anyone overtake on the straight?

For the last few years I've been watching live on RTL when not live in UK and when abroad. It was nip and tuck whether RTL continued in 2018 but they did. I hope they carry on in the future.

It’s funny what some folk will pay money for. I've even heard of them paying to live in a tin box in a field although they have perfectly good homes elsewhere. Who'd have thought it? hugegrins

The trouble is partly what TV does to the sport it is paying for.

Even watching WRC it is difficult to detect that the cars are NOT actually racing against each, so strong are the editors attempts to manipulate excitement. I spent a few years in the car or as a Marshall and don't recognise the TV program as rallying.

I tried once more to watch formula E for the China race, but it was just a procession from beginning to end with the only interest being with cars running into the back of each other. The commentators were trying to get excited about the fact that one car might over take another. They virtually never did though!! Once again it finished under a full course yellow. It's usually either that or finishing under the safety car. Even the eventual winner wasn't certain he had won because of some obscure penalty. I'd rather watch Scalextric racing, it sounds the same but with more excitement.
