Looking to buy a Legend GL
Hi I am looking to buy a legend or something similar.
I have seen two legend GLs. The first is a petrol 2.0l It is 1989 with 40,000 miles. Excellent interior but only sleeps 2. (Irrelevant if there are only 2 seatbelts. Apparently it's bodywork is in excellent condition with rust only on one arch.
The second is a 1995 diesel 2.5. Good condition. Maybe pin pricks of rust. Sleeps 4 but again only 2 belts.
It would be helpful to know about the engines. Do they pull sufficiently?
Also the petrol one has a broken gas heater. Do you know how much that would cost to repair?
It also does not have power steering and I thought I could fit that though thought it would cost about £600 looking at a previous post. Any comments helpful.
Do you know if rear seatbelts can be retrofitted?
Think that is all.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Looking to buy a Legend GL
I can't recall now when the Transit petrol engines went injection. Whether injected or not, the 2 litre petrol should be adequately powerful, but if it's pre-injection then it will probably be pretty thirsty (ours was!).
And I can't recall when the 2.5 diesel gained a turbo. If it's a Tdi then it should be powerful enough (ours was) and fuel consumption pretty good too. If it has no turbo, it will probably be a bit sluggish. The diesel engines should go on for 100s of thousands of miles.
If it has sideways-facing rear seats, retrofitting seat belts may technically be possible but it's very very strongly recommended that you don't - because sideways-facing lap belts have proven to be very poor protection in an accident. They have not been legal in newly built vehicles for a long time now, with good reason.

I have a 1989 2.0 L petrol Legend. It is a touch thirsty if you drive with your foot to the floor... I am learning to be a bit more efficient with my gear changing. I was happily surprised at how well it pulls and keeps up with traffic. It will do 70 with a bit of coaxing but I try and stick to around 60 to conserve the fuel. The one area it can struggle is on long hills. You have to learn the best point to gear down to keep the momentum going for as long as possible.
Seatbelts can be retrofitted but must be done professionally as they need to be anchored to the floor.
I am still deciding whether to go to the expense of having power steering fitted. Other than very low speed manouvering it is fine. A bit of hard work when having to 5 point turn to get out of a little country road.
The gas heater is very basic so should be a simple repair... I stripped mine down to give it a good clean.
Good luck with your search.

Re: Looking to buy a Legend GL
We have a 1991 Ford Legend GL. It is a 2.5 Diesel automatic. We had the electric power steering fitted and it has made all the difference in using the vehicle, so we are happy to have spent the money having it fitted. It is a 4 berth. The bench seats become two forward facing seats and there are seat belts fitted. As to whether they are retro fitted I cannot say but assume they have been.
It also struggles with the hills but can do 70mph on a (flat) motorway.
