After the toilet has been unused for a while black flakes appear in the flush water. Any cures for this?

If you are using pink flush additive, stop using it. Well known problem.

Clean out thoroughly, I used clothes washing tablets and hot water, leave to soak, drain and repeat if necessary, I kept doing it until clear, rinse well, fill up the flushing tank with water , DO NOT PUT IN THE PINK STUFF

I use  liquid washing, used for clothes,  a cap full  cheap stuff will do, from Aldi / lidyl  etc.

Hi have just read that pink fluid is cause of black bits.  I have been adding the pink stuff to get rid of the black bits!   Has anyone established why it happens?  and why do the makers of the pink stuff suggest we should us it ?
Does any one want a big bottle of the pink stuff for free?

Apparently Thetford have a new formula in their pink stuff. We don't tend to leave any flush in the tank and don't suffer with black bits and do use pink stuff. Maybe not leaving it to stand is the key.

I recently used Elsan's version of the Thetford pink stuff. It initially resulted in loads of black bits into the bowl, but now seems to have cleared it.

As advised "DO NOT PUT IN THE PINK STUFF",

The black bits are known as Biofilm.

I stopped using that pink rubbish years ago & just flush the toilet with nice clean water.

I also stopped using the blue stuff years ago & use Tesco detergent washing tablets, now have a spotless cassette & a faint laundry smell when emptying, which is not particularly enticing, but much better than the smell of $h#t.
