Dead engine - what next?
Hello All
Our 1991 VW T4 Trident van conked out on the way to Devon in August. It is currently sitting with The VW Specialist in Gosport (Hampshire) who have told us we need a new engine. They have attempted to source one with no luck. All my enquiries have also drawn a blank. So I have 2 parts to this post:
1 - does anyone know where I can get a VW T4 AAC type engine? Has anyone replaced their engine and how has it gone? How much did it cost?
2 - if we have no luck finding a suitable engine, is there a company that will buy the van to break down for spares? It still has all the original interior and appliances which are in good working condition. We even still have to original crockery, minus 1 wine glass which someone (me) broke on our very first outing. I don't have the time, skill or space to break down, store and sell individual parts. I'm just hoping to get something back from the best part of 6 grand!
Thanks in advance.

It would be interesting to know exactly why it needs a new engine. There's not a lot that can't be rebuilt or replaced: in essence making virtually a new engine whereas a unit from a junk yard or other source might be time expired anyway.
Just a thought.

Like Bartfarst I would want a detailed explanation of why they say you need a new engine. I've no knowledge of that particular garage, but a general observation is that many garages like saying "you need a new engine" because it is profitable, easy work for them.
I too would not trust a secondhand engine from a breaker's - if I had a choice and knew the history of my engine well, I would much rather have my own engine rebuilt. I know from personal experience that most breakers will lie to you about the history of an engine just to get your money.
Yes - there is at least one company that specialises in breaking caravans/motorhomes, but hopefully it won't come to that!
