Confused
I have just come back from a few days in Suffolk. On many of the roads I came across a large number of warning signs reading "Caution road studs removed". I am a driver with many (too many) years experience, but I am unclear as to how I should modify my driving in the light of such a warning. I am sure there are many on the forum far cleverer than me who can explain.
Oh and I reckon the road signs cost several hundred pounds (of my road tax money) each.

Re: Confused
Quite a few councils have adopted the change from 'cats eyes' to 'road studs' ours included. The press have picked it up and seem to think that they can make a joke of Norfolk and Suffolk for doing it 'as they don't want to appear as cruel to animals.. In fairness, the 'cats eyes' term must be quite alarming to foreigners who don't use the term.

Re: Confused
I can imagine foreign tourists not understanding " cat's eyes" but have we really bred children who take it literally ?
My favourite, quite common locally, is " Oncoming vehicles in the middle of the road" Am I supposed to shrink the car ?
What about Smart motorways. I always assume they are a signal for the driver to set cruise control and go back to make sandwiches while the motorway takes over the van.

Re: Confused
Why would this be confusing?
The studs have been removed so it's to warn you if you're driving at night that the lanes might not show up as well as usual.
I think the bit about tourists is a bit of media hype. It's more to do with the new solar "studs" needing a different trade name.

Re: Confused
So will we soon be renaming Zebra Crossings so as not to disappoint stupid Merkin tourists who might otherwise wait for hours by urban roadsides anticipating sightings of stripey African equids?

Gosh......thanks for that...I won't bother keeping an eye out for zebras at the crossing in Selsdon in future. Re: Confused
I presume we all obey to the letter!! those "Slow, loose chippings 10mph" signs when the road has just been repaired!!
And of course, we all slow down when the sign says, "Beware Floods" . . . even if it hasn't rained for several months!!
Also the 40mph signs on motorway gantries which go on and on for 10 miles or more, after which is says "All Clear" . . . but you haven't seen any reason for the need to slow down!!!
These are just a few examples of why many motorists tend to ignore all road signs, even when they do matter!!!

You're very welcome, Bobskate.
For the avoidance of doubt, by the way, I assume you don't mean the one in Selsdon Park Road, near the junction of Pixton Way, as that would attract ornithological types thinking they might enjoy a sighting of members of the Pelecanidae family waddling across with a beakful of fish . . .

Yes, the A685 out of Kirby Stephen has a panoply of signs,"20mph", "loose chippings", "skid risk" and "no road markings". Fine, except the road has markings and is as smooth as a road with no loose chippings
Needless to say, everyone was ignoring the 20 mph sign.

Re: Confused
There used to be a sign on the A38 south of Exeter that dispalyed 'Not in Use' But with everyone looking at it then it clearly was - why didn't they just pick it up.

You think you're confused?

Well you clearly know the area. I was in fact thinking of the one outside what used to be Woolworths.rogerblack wrote:You're very welcome, Bobskate.

Well a good question....let me ponder it. Meanwhile perhaps I should give some thought as to the meaning of life before solving the on/off topic one. It's easier.Gromi wrote:

Re: Confused
Now the boring bit. The paint used for the white lines on the road now has small glass balls added, this reflects your headlight so there is no need for cats eyes. The trouble is with all the good ideas "there is always a drawback" The paint erodes from the road and is not repainted, well, not where I live anyway. So, no cats eyes and no reflective paint. That is the reason when Mr BMW is driving towards you on an unlit road, you can't see a thing.
