I've found one!
Hi.
Found one. Just picked up my camper. It's a Symbol 2.0L petrol 2001, very happy with the drive but my first question (many more will follow:hugegrins:)Has anyone took the big rear step off if so was it a bolt on as it seems unnecessary to me when a small portable step would be fine?
Regards
Tony

There are regular threads from members with small vans asking how extra storage space can be achieved, and a back box resting on, or supported by the rear step is one of the suggestions I've seen. You may find it very useful in the end?

I took mine off, yes, it was a bolt on job and one of the reasons for removing it was that two of the fixings were bolts through the pinch welds on the rear skirt.Wroxham29 wrote:Hi.

I hadn't realised this until one broke through.
We tended to keep the back doors closed and used the side door, so it wasn't missed.
EDIT: just read Dave's post. If yours is fixed the way mine was, I would be very wary of having a constant load on it.
Forgot to say - Happy New Van

Hi Frank
I was quite impressed by one I saw at Knaresborough CC site.
The chap had bought a very large plastic box with a lockable lid, and he had fixed a pair of hangers on the doors which took some of the weight so the box was not resting only on the step. (The box could be locked onto the hangers when in transit.) He did use his rear doors, but it took him only seconds to lift off the box and chain it alongside the step.
Apart from having to drill holes in the doors it was a classic. Did the job perfectly for the cost of an inexpensive box and a few fittings.

Hi there. Enjoy your new van. We were unsure about the rear step on our Symbol but have actually found it to be useful. It has actually encouraged us to use the rear doors!
Happy travels, take care

I have fitted two chequer plate boxes on my rear doors under the cycle rack and the weight using wedges is taken by the rear step,,BUSBY,,

Each to their own but my personal opinion is they form an excellent protection from rear end "shunts" or knocks. I have a metal step at the rear of my van as well as a towbar and some dozy driver on the motorway hadn't noticed the traffic at a standstill and ran in the back of me.
Did nothing to my van but smashed his number plate and damaged his front bumper.
