2005 Topaz rear door locked shut
Hi, On holiday and rear door of Topaz not working and in locked position. Can hear it making all the right noises when using the key fob and have taken off the small moulding around the handle on the inside and some of the screws that can be seen inside but the plastic moulding of the showerroom does not come away. I dont think it will until the door is in the open position. Looking on the internet i see the lock mechanism is likely to be that one of the rods has come loose or a plastic bit has failed but i cant see how to get into this with the plastic moulding still on. Any clues ?

Are you sure you have not Deadlocked it.
We keep ours Deadlocked and only open when we wish to open the Tailgate.
Deadlocked is key turned to the right so as to leave the key slot Horizontal.
Normal is key Vertical.
To open turn key to the left and pull latch.
Hope this helps

Please Note when the Tailgate is Deadlocked the tailgate will NOT open with the central locking Only with the key.

Hi Alf,
No this is not the problem as it will not open with key from outside as you have described. I am thinking something internally has come adrift but it is getting past the plastic moulding to get inside is the problem. Ho hum but thanks for the advice.

No can't open it from inside or out using keys or fob that is the problem. And it does not look to me as though the plastic moulding comes off in the closed position !

It's normally the central locking bar that comes out, this does not affect the key part of the lock it should work from both inside and outside with the key if not it looks to be more serious. Did you try using the key turning to the left and lifting the locking handle. you need the door open to remove the door trim panel to access the locking mechanism.

Sorry, I can only come up with the obvious suggestion, "Have you tried a VW main dealer".
If anyone would know how to overcome your rather baffling puzzle it must be them.

One other thing to try is to have someone press down with varying degrees of force on the tailgate while you try to unlock it - if the cause is that part of the lock mechanism is jammed, this can sometimes take enough pressure off it to allow it to free up and move.
