vw topaz new leisure battery

Hi, i have just fitted a new leisure battery and the resting charge is reading 12.4v.
But when i turn on internal lights then the voltage reading drops away to around 9v and the fluorescent tubes do not work correctly.
Likewise the battery will not start up my Ebersbacher heater without the engine running.
I changed the last battery which was doing the same as i believed it to be kaput...
Can anybody offer a suggestion as to what might be the problem causing a voltage drain under load

There is probably a high resistance connection in the battery circuit, either in the -ve connection to the chassis or the fuse in the +ve, it could be a fault at one of the battery terminal connections. You just have to work your way around the circuit systematically till you find the problem - no magic wand!

any ideas where the - ve earth connects to Chassis on the VW Topaz, battery is in cupboard under hob and where the fuse for the + ve is located, everything was working fine before winter shutdown shrugg

With a bit of luck , someone who has a Topaz will pick this up to advise on location but there is no guarantee that two vans of the same model are wired in exactly the same way.
