Switch Positions. Empty Switch Positions.

Post by Rodney Goldup Fri Aug 19, 2016 9:12 pm

I am Rod and I have a 2005 Trooper.  Unfortunately the handbook is for a 2003 model.  On my electrics control panel the left power switch is a three position switch whereas the handbook deals with a two position switch.  On mine, the upper position is labelled with a battery with a 'V' and the lower position with a battery with a 'L'.  Can someone please tell me what these two positions are for ?  Presumably one is for when plugged into the mains and the other when 'freestanding' but I would like to know what the proper handbook says.  A scanned and emailed copy of the appropriate page would be great.  Thanks in anticipation,  Rod.

As Frederic says above........ but only on mains hook-up.
The centre position charges both engine and hab. batteries, but experience shows that it is not very efficient.
When the engine is running the alternator charges both batteries (and powers the fridge).

I wonder if this is one area where a Topaz and a Trooper are wired differently? I'm fairly sure our 2005 Trooper does not behave like this. I'm fairly certain that in the lower and centre position the mains charger (when on EHU, obviously) only charges the habitation battery, and when in the upper position it only charges the vehicle battery.

Unfortunately the Trooper is a few hundred miles away from here at the moment so I can't check for sure...

Many thanks for the help.  In view of the slight uncertainty in the responses I have done some more research.  The control panel is a Sargent Electrical unit but unfortunately only marked with the AS logo and no model type.  I went onto the Sargent website where they provide operating instructing for all their units in PDF format.  I have found mine to be close to an AC85 with the two position Power switch and I now have full instructions.  Thanks again for your help,  Rod.

With the Rocker Switch in central position the In-vehicle mains charger is isolated from both batteries.

I suspect this is something that varied a lot with year, model and what the installer felt like doing at the time! I'm 99.999% sure that on our Trooper it charges the leisure battery, but all internal appliances are turned off.

I think Mojo must be right in saying that the Trooper and Topaz may be wired differently. In response to an enquiry about 12 months ago, I took voltage readings from both batteries in all three switch positions. In either of the selected switch positions the chosen battery voltage was raised to 13.6 or 14 ( or thereabout) and the non chosen battery showed no voltage rise. In the centre switch position, both batteries showed a voltage rise but it was very much less than when charging just one battery. Hence my remark that it is not very efficient.
