Hi all, i have noticed that all the little stainless struts that hold the guttering in place have come unstuck from the side of the van.
The only thing holding the guttering on at the moment is the silicon its embedded in...
Would the best thing to reattatch the struts be Sikaflex?. Any particular version?.
A quick drying one would be best i guess so they dont move whilst its curing.
Has anyone had to do this repair?.
What did you use to hold the struts in place whilst they cured?.
Cheers all.

Funny you mention this........I have today just finished cleaning my Harmony roof.
(a once a year job!)
I too noticed that there are about four of these fixings which have come away from the body.
I am thinking Sikaflex but would need to ensure that the surface is clean. At the moment there is a large build up of algae around the fixing points.
I will be interested also if anyone has tackled this job.

When I did mine - on a Flair - I did not want a repeat of them coming loose (while doing 70MPH on the motorway) so I fixed them in place with [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

It worked well, if a bit messy - I taped underneath it with masking tape to stop it running down in the 5 mins while it sets, and I ran a second layer of epoxy over the top once the base was refixed in place. There are quicker-setting epoxies that might have made the job easier.

Yes - I kept the van for another couple of years after the fix and there was no sign of the loose ones loosening again. The quick-set epoxies appear to be well suited to that application because they remain quite soft relative to the slower setting ones, and that seems to work well as a bond on GRP.

An alternative might be Araldite Fusion, which is designed to set in 90 seconds - though I should caution that you need to be very act-together with products like that. Typically you need helpers so that you can apply the glue while someone else holds in place to set. You do also need to hold it very still, or the resulting bond is nowhere near as good as it ~could~ be...

Edit: Disposable nitrile gloves are a good investment too, so that you can pull away and leave the glove stuck to the workpiece if necessary!

Got the struts glued up today with the uni bond power epoxy mentioned above. Easy to work with a cured quite rapidly too. Thanks for the advice!!  hugegrins hugegrins hugegrins hugegrins

I redid mine as well.
Wasn't too bad a job in the end.
Managed to clean the area where the mounts fix by gently flexing the black gutter trim out of the way.
Job done.
