Coolant Sensor Empty Coolant Sensor

Post by ChrisJersey Thu Jul 28, 2016 8:44 am

Hi There

We've got a problem with temperature gauge just moving off the cold, rest position,  checked sensor

The question is, does anybody have any resistance specifications for different temperatures for the blue temperature sender sensor so I can determine if it is faulty. I can confirm the gauge is not faulty.

Readings on my sender sensor
@ 20 degrees 14kohms, engine running voltage 8.8volts
@ 52 degrees 7.4kohms, engine running voltage 8.55volts
@ 90 degrees approx, fan cut in 6.8kohms, engine running voltage 8.2volts

I think these resistance values are high and would expect them to be lower when the engine is up to operating temperature?

Please help if you can, it's driving us mad!
Thank you

Which engine do you have?
I might be able to get some info from an Autodata CD I have

Hi Chris, copy from Autodata disc:
Coolant Sensor Coolan10

My van is a 2ltr petrol, a bit earlier than yours. The gauge does not come off it's stop for several minutes after the engine has started from cold, two or three miles in winter. Then it works as normal, the fan comes on at 90 degrees and switches off again at around 85.
The sensor on mine also has connections for the 'overheat' light - I can't remember offhand whether there are three or four wires to it. I spliced a low coolant switch to it so that the overheat light comes on if the coolant is low.

HTH
Frank

EDIT:
Just remembered! there are two temp senders, one above the other - the data above is for the ECU sender, not the gauge.
