That's bad enough but they tend to put kisses at the end too.Paulmold wrote:I can't stand being addresses as 'hun' , presumably shortened from 'honey'. It seems to be the 'in' way to address people on Facebook. I only look at a couple of for sale groups and I noticed that anyone asking a question about an item is answered with 'hun'.
I have never been a Ms. Hate it.

Re: Why can't we talk English
I don't like people who mumble so fast that all the words merge into one, specially on TV with background music playing far too loud.
"Steamdrivenandy" is a good example. Is that a word in any language??
Getting me coat - quickly!!!

Whew ! thought that was just me going deaf.
Can I put in a word for "a" ? Have you noticed how many people now use the emphatic "ay" when they actually mean " a " ?
"Have you got ay motorhome ?" not " Have you got a motorhome ?"
Even John Humphreys does it and he's meant to speak proper and has written books about speaking and writing proper.

I'm not sure about it being a word Dave, but sometimes I wish I'd not chosen it as an email address as it takes so long to type.
On the TV sound issue, try a sounbar/soundbox, the speakers on modern TV's are so small that the sound is compromised.

Re: Why can't we talk English
Got a soundbar Andy, but it's not the quality of the TV sound that's the problem.steamdrivenandy wrote:On the TV sound issue, try a sounbar/soundbox, the speakers on modern TV's are so small that the sound is compromised.
It's the combination of high speed mumbling and loud background noise.
Nearly as irritating as all the "flashy flashy" nonsense they do recently, with a dozen images flashed on screen within half a second, every time a scene changes.
Plus the way they (Americans are the worst) spend five minutes after each commercial break reminding you where the programme had got to before the break.
Plus the camera being focussed on the presenter as he describes a fascinating scene behind him - which you can't see because it's out of focus.
I do wish they wouldn't let the kiddies play with their techie toys while making what should be erudite and informative programmes. I have an attention span in excess of 15 seconds, and can handle words of more than one syllable. (Even polysyllabic ones like "steamdrivenandy" )
Good rant that!

Not bought the new van yet then Andy? What's top of the list now?
Just so you don't refer to "The Hymer" several times in every post!! That's amusing, rather than annoying - and somewhat pretentious too!!

Re: Why can't we talk English
I'm totally sick of listening to an advert that seems to have been on the telly for years and years and......you get the picture. Being one of those you don't watch, it sounded like the chap was selling a vacuum called a "cheetah kera". Eventually (because I was so off with it) I watched the ad to discover he (the inventor) was actually saying, "G Tech Air Ram"
If he's made a few bob, perhaps he could employ somebody to enunciate his script for him

I'm so glad it's not my hearing being impaired, tv sound is sometimes so bad, I resort to subtitles to overcome the mumbling.

Pardon?
I have the same problem, especially on programmes when there is a cookery slot and several people "chipping" in. They all want to talk so it becomes a babble and following the recipe becomes impossible Most times I've got to turn the sound off, really annoying. If it's a dish I want to cook, I just look it up later on the net.
Incidentally, the G Tech numpty is equally as annoying as he fills the afternoon ads on C4 with his vacuums, lawn mowers, e bikes, etc. Yes, I know, need to get out more

Re: Why can't we talk English
Being a bit deaf myself I resort to TV subtitles, but find them exasperating as I assume computer program produced with some awful errors. Thinking of the huge blunders I have noticed, would hate to eat anything following recipe subtitles as ingredients. I immagine it would turn out like some thing of a witches brew. ie: leg of lamb possibly = Egg of Lamp
Best remedy is give up on TV anyway, its all a load of repeats and adverts anyway. Books or online for me. Keep thinking I might stop paying a TV Liscense out as a total waste of money for biased news reports, often inacurate.
I really do not need ''''''flea check'''''' or a vacume clener either.

Re: Why can't we talk English
I just had a call from an eager young super-salesman from our local garage,
quite openly trying to sell us a new car.
Very polite he was, and asked if he could send us some info via email. I agreed, but asked him to ensure we don't get a load of advertising * Inappropriate Word * coming through.
"No sweat" he said, "I get a lot of that myself so I feel your pain!"
We will go and see what they have to offer, and I shall enjoy the encounter enormously!

While you're out Dave, why don't you grab a meal, chomp it and then neck a beer with it ?
Any restaurant where grabbing, chomping and necking are usual is off my " to go" list.

Re: Why can't we talk English
Can anyone tell me why, when an interviewee is responding to a question on TV, the answer has to begin with, "so,..........."
I just wish the so and so's would stop it

I'd also ban all speakers who finish off each sentence with a rising inflexion. Might be so Californian but it makes me cringe. We used to get children at school who had beautiful singing voices but wrecked it all by singing, very loudly, with a pseudo American accent.

Re: Why can't we talk English
When did the word absolutely become interchangeable with the word yes. As in " Do you think Auto-Sleeper produce the finest motorhomes ? " " Absolutely " The word absolute has no relationship to the word yes or for that matter the word no. (just in case you don't think Auto-Sleeper produce the finest motorhomes ! )

Afternoon all. Really enjoying this thread and whole heartedly agree with all complaints especially " can I get" and starting sentences with "so". I also hate being called "guys". Another annoying habit is using eg: My "go to" instead of "my favorite"! Grumble over!

Re: Why can't we talk English
Oh that reminds me. I detest being called mate by trendy young staff in bars and resturants. If I am a customer it is "Sir" not mate. I do not take kindly to such street gutter familiar terminology, so much so I take my trade elsewhere if so addressed. Just makes me want to state "I am not your "Mate" and we are certainly not friends and our relationship is not familiar". I worked in retail before they were born and manners mattered then and still do in my view. Good service may bring an invitation to call me by my name, but never do I accept the term mate.

I really hate the use of the word " kids" . It always sounds faintly contemptuous to me and quite dismissive.
