Re: Why can't we talk English
My pet hate is the use of 'two times the power' or 'two times as long', usually in adverts. What happened to 'twice the power' or 'twice as long' ?

I reckon, after 6 pages of why can't we talk English, it is time to learn and speak Welsh. The oldest language in the UK.

Re: Why can't we talk English
I suppose we should make the effort to understand some of the gobbledegook which passes for English these days. This is an email I received yesterday from Openreach (verbatim):
" In regards to your query, we would like to inform you that I am happy to inform you the Openreach has an ongoing project for this DP-32 to divert your line through cabinet. As this line is included in a cabinet project roll outs. In which your line would be diverted to the provide Fibre services. However, 2017/2018 Q2 is mentioned on our records to be the next update.
As, upgradation is designed by the planning team which is a long procedure and has involvement of cost, resources and a plan and we do not have any estimation date for the project completion date.
Please keep an eye on our website for future updates-https://www.homeandwork.openreach.co.uk/when-can-i-get-fibre.aspx
Thanks & regards,
Fibre Enquiries Team"
Upgradation???? I replied thus:
"Thank you for your reply. It's written in jargon. As far as I can tell it says "we have no idea when you'll get fibre". Is that correct?"
We seem to be speaking different languages. Which reminds me:

We seem to be speaking different languages. Which reminds me:
A little mouse lived behind the skirting board. He was hungry. So he thought he’d venture out from behind the skirting, to search for food. But as he approached the hole in the skirting, he remembered the advice which his late father had given him: “Before going out, son, always wait, and listen”.
So he did. And he was glad, because – from the other side of the skirting – he could hear purring and “meeaw, meeaw”. He said to himself: “Oh dear. There’s a cat there. I’ll wait and try later. I’m so glad I took my father’s advice.”
Half an hour later, the mouse tried again. He went up to the hole – and again remembered the advice which his late father had given him: “Before going out, always wait, and listen”.
So again he did. And this time he heard a growl, and “woof, woof.” The little mouse said to himself: “Ah. Good. A dog has come and has chased away the nasty cat. So it’s safe for me to go out.” And out he went.
Sadly, outside the hole remained the cat. Which gobbled up the mouse. After which the cat, stroking his whiskers, said to himself: “I’m so glad I remembered the advice which my father gave me: it’s good to learn a second language!”

Re: Why can't we talk English
Isn't the oldest language in Britain Brythonic which I believe evolved in to the separate regional languages including Welsh and CORNISH amongst others? Not sure our Welsh friends can make that claim can they?Bad Penny wrote:I reckon, after 6 pages of why can't we talk English, it is time to learn and speak Welsh. The oldest language in the UK.

Cornwall is where my mothers family came from after a period of some years in America, so I'm not going to argue that point, I claim to be a member of both camps anyway.

Re: Why can't we talk English
What an intertwined lot we are, my forebears are Welsh, Lady G's are Irish and we have Canadian passports as well as an English one, not a mention of Cornwall where we live for now Nearly moved to Manorbier a few years ago having spent two years setting up what should have been a great business in Cardiff but the owner wouldn't listen so I left and it subsequently stopped operating. Shame... anyway back to the thread!

Re: Why can't we talk English
Cymro, good joke
When I read things like the reply you got from Openreach, I keep thinking of the old Brucie game, "please rearrange these words into a well known phase or saying". The invention of words like "upgradation" appears to be an American thing, sadly creeping into our culture.

Askit, one minute you claim to talk Scottish and rubbish and then you talk absolute common sense, what happened?

You have heard of Jekyll and Hyde, right
Which gives me a chance (ala Cymro) to pass on an apocryphal story from my work life.
A guy appeared in court charged with breach of the peace and assault. He pled guilty and his brief, in mitigation, explained to the Sheriff (our version of judge) that the taking of alcoholic beverage was to blame. He said, "it's like Jekyll and Hyde, after too many drinks he goes from being mild mannered to a man possessed"
The Sheriff said "I understand completely, and in view of the circumstance, Dr Jekyll is admonished"
"Mr Hyde, however, will go to jail for three months"

I wish that the criminal law of England and Wales had the third verdict, available in Scotland: (1) Guilty; and 2 aquittal verdicts: (2) Not Guilty; and (3) Not Proven.
That last one says a lot!

Re: Why can't we talk English
Previously I would have disagreed with you, it caused all sorts of problems for victims and their families. I'm less concerned about it now as we have the "double jeopardy" law which allows, should new evidence emerge, a person to be tried again for the original offence.Cymro wrote:I wish that the criminal law of England and Wales had the third verdict, available in Scotland: (1) Guilty; and 2 aquittal verdicts: (2) Not Guilty; and (3) Not Proven.
