VW T4 Trophy window seals etc
Hello, my 1994 VW T4 A/S Trophy has been outside for 10 years and is succumbing to rust on wheel arches and joins, mainly.
A recommended restorer has found leaking window seals, especially the plastic surrounds on the rear side windows, which has led to internal woodrot. Rainwater is likely to have travelled downwards and caused the rust.
Does anyone have experience of this problem? Have you been able to replace window seals and plastic surrounds? How successful has replacing the rotten wood been? Any advice greatly appreciated.Thank you.Janet

Re: VW T4 Trophy window seals etc
Leaks around windows are a very common problem, but the underlying causes can differ. Most common problem seems to be a failure of the seal between the window frame and the body of the van, though ~sometimes~ it can just be a build-up of crud in the drainage channels. If you do a forum search for "leaking window" you'll find plenty of examples, and descriptions of how to solve. New seals are cheap but the work can be labour-intensive.
Rust on wheelarches is also common (though not so much so on VWs) and generally it is well worth paying to have the metalwork repaired properly - the difference in value between a rusty looking van and a tidy one is typically huge. It's also likely to stop what is usually a cosmetic issue spreading and becoming a structural one, so the sooner you have it fixed the better (IMO, having been there and done it).
