caprice 2020 cooker
I left one of the burners on by mistake and closed the lid. The explosion was very loud with glass everywhere. Trying to purchase a replacement is looking hopeless. Does anybody have a suggestion on where one could be had.
I don't want this to happen to anybody else so please be carefull.

Your by no means the first and won't be the last - it takes years for all the glass fragments to emerge!!!

Re: caprice 2020 cooker
I can sympathise , I did the very same thing, in a brand new caravan first time out in it and the very first meal in it as well, my mishap also set a tea cloth alight, no damage from that as I quickly got up from the table and threw it into the sink and turned the tap on, found a replacement glass from a caravan dealer in Great Yarmouth, had to order it for next day delivery.
Have you tried any dealers? you never know or the makers of the cooker?

Another option if it doesn't have any complex bonded-on fixings is to replace with perspex of an appropriate colour. I did this as a precautionary measure with the Smev glass covers on my current van when I discovered that each would be more than £70 to replace (the originals going into storage in the loft to be replaced when I sell the van). Perspex is pretty easy to cut to shape with a jigsaw, and I used a rotary wire brush to remove the gloss top finish so that I can put/drop whatever I want on them without worrying about scratching them.
I should add that perspex won't tolerate a hob burner being left on underneath either - I bonded a sheet of aluminium under mine so that if it happens it won't drip molten plastic onto the burner!

Re: caprice 2020 cooker
I fpund the Ebay one simply by searching 'caprice 2020 lid'. Part number is GL6060. It is a Spinflo cooker by the way
The link I gave is to the sellers list of items. It's in that list
Couldn't give direct link from my tablet but here it is now (from my laptop).. Oh, sorry it's also out of stock !!!

With due respect to your ingenuity mojo, I wouldn't even attempt to do the above! By the time you've purchased your 5mm thick pieces of Perspex, plus the aluminium sheet, glue, and the labour involved, I'm sure you're well on the way to the £140 cost of two new covers.
What I would do if I was to worry about such things is purchase a spare pair of glass covers while they're still available, after all the cost is negligible compared to the purchase price of the van, and store them in the loft. If they've not been used by the time you come to sell the van, you have something of worth to sell on.., and maybe even make a profit.

Re: caprice 2020 cooker
There are quite a few Spinflo glass lids on Ebay that don't have the model number listed. Maybe worth looking through and seeing if any are the right size.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=glass+hob+cover+spinflo&_osacat=43566&_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=glass+hob+cover+spinflo&_sacat=131090
Also take a look at Magnum Motorhomes , they have two Spinflo lids listed, check size against these..

Nah - nowhere near £140 - I reckon in total the parts cost was £20, though I did buy the perspex as a bigger sheet as part of another couple of jobs. Labour cost: Nil - it's my own time. If they were a reasonable amount of money (maybe £20 each) as spares I would consider it, but I don't have £140 spare to dedicate to two pieces of glass in the loft. Let's face it - the only reason they are priced at £70 each is because the people who sell them think that we have no other choice.
The thing I hate about the glass tops (in a Trooper, at least) is that they take up so much of the worktop space. So you can either choose to put things on them, and scratch them, or avoid putting things on them and have to keep moving stuff about. So I chose to replace them with something I could put stuff on and not worry about covering them with scratches. But each to their own - what I consider important some people would not even think twice about!

Re: caprice 2020 cooker
You don`t have to have scratched tops, all it needs is the non slip mating , the heavy duty stuff cut to shape, put one underneath as well, no rattling when travelling and a surface to put things on which stay there, I have a plant pot stays even when travelling, ok!!! off when cooking.
The one had to buy for the caravan was £60 plus that was eight years ago.nothing is cheap when it comes to motorhomes / caravans.

Re: caprice 2020 cooker
Alternatively, put a notice on the underside of the lid (showing when up) TURN THE GAS OFF. The lid on the cooker that I have at home has a lever coupled to all the taps so impossible to lower lid while gas is on. I hadnt realised this until the inspector was doing a gas check. Should be compulsory on all gas appliances......

Re: caprice 2020 cooker
When mine went it was caused by a rucksack strap catching the electric ring knob on the way out of the van for a walk. In that van it was easy to get at the main supply switch and leave that off ill needed but in this van it is not so final check on leaving is that all rings/burners are off.

There are a couple of 2040 lids in the eBay list, I'm reasonably sure that the 2040 (which we have in our Exec) is the 2020 with an electric ring, so that they may be identical.
Worth checking out the measurements with the seller on those perhaps?

Thanks for all your comments, I have tried suggestions but no luck.
I am still looking. With regards to the last message from meanchris, does the lid for the 2040 cooker have side fixings?

Don't think the lids are the same, part number for 2020 is GL6060, and for the 2040 is G990BK

I don't know whether this will help but, here are some pics with the measurements for the Caprice 2040 glass lid
The lid is 486mm wide (19&1/8") by 445mm front to back (17&1/2")

Thanks for the photos, The measurements are just about the same but the hinges are very different. However I will keep the 2040 lid in mind if other avenues fail.

Re: caprice 2020 cooker
Yes, I found the 2020 exploded (oops) drawing by following Peter's link, I was wondering whether the 2040's through the glass hinges could be removed and replaced with the edge mounted hinges of the 2020.
You'd need to know the lid glass thickness, and possibly pics of the rear corners in better detail.
Let me know if you decide to go this route and want more pics.
The alternative might be to find a glass specialist and get one cut, if the hinges can be refitted afterwards.

Re: caprice 2020 cooker
Thanks for all your suggestions, I have purchased a replacement cooker, used of course, complete with glass lid. It seemed to be the only way.
