wiring query
I have a 2001 Y reg Symbol. Can anyone help me with regard to identifying the function of a separate red wire which runs from the positive terminal of the battery and contains a 30 amp blade fuse in a housing which hangs just above the positive terminal of the battery. The fuse appears to melt in the fuse housing on a regular basis. Any help in identifying this wire and its purpose would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Re: wiring query
Normally there are two fuses hanging above the battery, one being for the split-charge system and one for the fridge to run on 12v whilst engine running. These are prone to melting due to shorting in the fuse holders due to rusting from water running from the windscreen scuttle onto them.

Hi,
As Paul says, fridge or leisure battery feed, or both? 30 amp is a big fuse. Obvious test is to remove fuse and see what stops working. You could replace holder with a decent quality one with a rubber sealing cap and smear it inside and out with vaseline or white grease,

Re: wiring query
Thanks guys for taking the time and trouble to help, much appreciated. The split-charge system referred to, does that mean the charging of both the leisure battery and vehicle battery whilst the engine is running?

Re: wiring query
Hi,
The split charge system is energised when the engine is running and connects the batteries together so that the leisure battery is being charged, at the same time a relay is energised to supply power to the fridge and disconnect the leisure battery from 12 volt appliances in the habitation area (lights, toilet etc.) If the relays energise without receiving power from the alternator it is possible to drain the leisure battery with the engine running as the fridge pulls power from the leisure,
