Number Plate Lights Empty Number Plate Lights

Post by Peter Brown Thu Sep 10, 2015 2:24 pm

Checking the van pre MOT and I found one of the number plate lights off.  Investigation showed that one terminal had corroded and broken off.  I ordered two number plate lamp & bulb @ £3.50 + vat each and replaced.  All connections were corroded and had to be cut off.

Now with MOT I looked at boxing them in to make weatherproof but decided that at the price it wasn't worth the trouble and have bought two more in case they are obsolete when corrosion gets to the new one's in another 4 years or so.

Good idea, they do look rather exposed. Do you have a link to the ones you bought?

Good point Peter. Will check mine before they fail. Would also be interested in source details for the replacement ones.
May also look at the alternative of a hard wired in LED replacement in the existing bulb housing and do away with the connectors which are always the vulnerable point.

Follow up - just nipped out and looked under rear of van. On my Broadway the number plate lights mounted in the rear fairing are nowhere near as exposed as it appears on Peter's Malvern. They are way above the level of the floor which effectively seals them off. Unscrewed both lights. Sure enough they are just full of dust and diesel soot!! Removing the connectors was a bit tight, due to some very minor corrosion.
So both lights fully stripped down washed and dried; bulbs cleaned; connectors has a light application of vaseline and the units refitted.
20 mins in pleasant evening sunshine here.
I shall put this on my 2year preventative maintenance list for the future.

I have had the same corrosion and dirt problem and replaced the units when my 2017 burford last year.
I found exact replacements on ebay and they are called JOKON recessed rear number plate light lamps.
It was quite difficult to remove the spades because of the corrosion and very short wires so the new lamp connections were coated with vaseline to make them easier to remove next time.
Fully sealed LED units would be the answer to this problem.

Just returned from service and MOT on my 2014 Broadway.  Had an ‘advisory’ for one of the number plate lights which was not working very well.  As with other post, when I removed the light fitting, it was really corroded around the terminals.  Took a good spray with WD40 to loosen the terminals.  Not surprising the light was hardly working.  Considering replacing with new fittings although the price on eBay is £14.99 per pair.  Always a bit wary of Autosleeper parts department as postage is usually more expensive than the parts making the cost more than eBay.

As it happens, whilst looking for something else yesterday I found the second of the two I bough still unused after a further seven years. I did take them out and clean them for a couple of years after the 2015 failure but haven't done so for at least five years now.

I’ve now ordered a pair of Jokon lights and will replace both on receipt next week.  £13.80 including P&P.  Not cheap for what they are but it would annoy me if I knew there was something as corroded sitting on the back of the Broadway.  Number Plate Lights 1f609
