Clutch replacement
Apologies for re-posting in this section (previously posted in technical)
I have recently bought a 2003 Symbol and fell that I need a new clutch. Local main Peugeot dealer wants about £1000. I have had much lower quotes but not sure of the repairer.
Can anyone recommend a mechanic / garage in the west Midlands.
Many thanks.

Re: Clutch replacement
Give these guys a call. They have an excellent reputation with gearboxs and clutches. Based in Wolverhampton.

I haven't used them myself, but they will be my first choice if I need work done.

Re: Clutch replacement
Sorry can't recommend in your area, I personally wouldn't pay anything like that for a clutch.
Fitting one is everyday stuff for the average garage, if you find a garage near you just have a look on internet and see if anyone recommends them or not. I found one near where I live (Leeds), small garage, low overheads, does an excellent job and is cheap.

Re: Clutch replacement
Thanks to both of you for your quick responses.
Finbar - I have spoken with the firm that you mentioned and they sound worthy of your recommendation ! As you haven't used them yourself I was just curious how you had heard about them.
Thanks

I have a VW T4 transporter and follow the VWT4forum. This company always gets highly recommended when someone asks about VW gearboxes. They are apparently experts not only in rebuilding, but also modifying gearboxes.
The forum users on the VWT4 forum take no prisoners. If they aren't happy, they will tell you straight.
If you do use them please let us know how you get on.

Thanks Finbar,
The guy that I spoke to seemed straightforward and knowledgeable.
I called late so he is going to quote me tomorrow.
Thanks for your help.
If I go ahead with them I will feed back on here.

Re: Clutch replacement
Just a quick update.
Having spoken with the guys recommended above, I had them change the clutch yesterday.
I dealt with 'Ian' who was helpful and very pleasant. Dealing only with gearboxes and clutches his knowledge was very good. He knew all about the water ingress issue with earlier boxers etc. for example. Fortunately no such problem on mine. The gearbox oil was changed as part of the job.
Although I have only done a few miles home, all seems good so far.
What is a little surprising is that the clutch was simply worn out after only 37,000, although one never knows how a vehicle has been driven in the past. Ian suggested that he sees this quite regularly and assumes that lower quality parts/materials are being used by the manufacturers.
Thanks again to Finbar or the recommend.

Re: Clutch replacement
How did price compare with the quote you had from dealer?

Re: Clutch replacement
Total cost was a little over one third of the dealers quote.
Quite a difference.............

Re: Clutch replacement
Thanks,
They do a lot of T4's and also had a citreon relay in yesterday (same as my peugeot) so they should be a good resource for camper/motorhome owners.

Re: Clutch replacement
The price quoted by the Dealer would include a change of dual mass flywheel at around £500 for the part alone.
At 37,000 miles I would doubt it would need replacing but more often than not they do

Re: Clutch replacement
Hi Dandywarhol,
the price from the dealer did NOT include the cost of a dual mass flywheel. I asked.
He told me that the cost of the 'standard' 3 part clutch kit was nearly £500 alone, and that they would assess the need for the flywheel once dismantled as it is not possible to tell beforehand.
The cost of the flywheel would have been in addition to the quoted price of nearly £1000................

Re: Clutch replacement
Don't think the pre-2007 Boxers have dual-mass flywheels but I could be wrong, just searched several on-line parts people and none came back with any.

Re: Clutch replacement
I agree with you regarding the pre 2007 boxers' flywheel - that was my view. The main dealer however mentioned it, so I assumed that I was wrong.
It just goes to show..............
