Mercedes Sprinter Horn
Maybe its my hearing, but a recent incident on the motorway and the need to use the horn to remind a wayward lorry that he was straying into my lane (probably on his phone) caused me to wonder if it was indeed audible enough above the din of the motorway.
Fortunately he recovered to his lane and no harm was done but on reflection I was not sure if he did indeed hear my horn sounding! Which set me thinking about upgrading or replacing it with a louder dual tone horn.
The current horn is a single tone and in my view rather quiet in db output for such a larger vehicle.
Has anyone considered replacing their horn - particularly on the Sprinter?

Go for it, easy enough thing to change and easy to find simple 2 tones on ebay like these..

Slightly concerned about canbus wiring, is that an issue?

Re: Mercedes Sprinter Horn
May need to what the current draw of any replacement. Existing relay is 15A. Existing horn has hardwired cabling with moulded end plug into loom.
Can't remember if I have actually used my horn, but it seems to be universally ridiculed. Sprinter forum in US has lots of replacement horn threads. US locomotive horn sound seems a popular choice.

I certainly think mine is a bit feeble - especially when compared to the two-tone horn on my old MB car

Re: Mercedes Sprinter Horn
It was a system I had on my previous M/H`s and after mounting it under the bonnet I just connected them up to the existing wires to the horn. I sealed the connection with tape and the system works well. People know I am about when I sound it. Hope this helps

Re: Mercedes Sprinter Horn
Fed up with the puny peep-peep of the M-B fitted horn I have today mounted a small compressor/twin-tone air horn.
I had to make a bracket, as there was not room to fit the unit behind the grille, see photo. The standard horn is supplied via a relay and 15 amp fuse, so no need to modify wiring, although I fitted an in-line 10amp fuse, as suggested in the instructions. Whilst not as ear-piercingly loud as full-size Fiamma air horns, this little unit is plenty loud enough!

Would these work on my VW T4, the horn is rather pathetic, that is when I can find it,

Pete,
Perhaps a mod when we get back from Spain - we are off next week.
Looks nice and tidy - does it come with a reasonable wiring diagram - particularly for a non sparks such as myself?

Re: Mercedes Sprinter Horn
Jaytee.. does nobody at M-B have ears?
Daisy, I know that our T5 Topaz had a relay in the horn circuit, that really(!) simplifies things- just two wires to move/extend. Have you checked out this horn issue on the VW T4 forum? It's a really brilliant resource for T4 and T5s. Get back to me if you need any help.
Liam,
Yes there is a wiring diagram but not really needed in our case, simply extend the two wires and make a simple bracket to hold the horn unit (there really is not enough room behind the Merc grille). I can post details, should anyone need them.
Parp, parp.....

Thanks Pete, the sparky side of the mod appears to be within my electrical skill set - on the other hand fettling and fixing a bracket is right up my street!
Could you tell us where you sourced yours from?
Thanks,
Liam

This looks very similar. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-136DB-LOUD-Air-Horns-Compact-TWIN-TONE-Compressor-CAR-TRUCK-VAN-LORRY-BOAT-/281358698522?hash=item418249081a:g:fMkAAOSwpDdVf81N

Re: Mercedes Sprinter Horn
Well... even the air horn I fitted was not enough to stop a prat on a scooter pulling out in front of me from a side street, despite my warning toots; I had nowhere to go as a truck was coming the other way. I managed to avoid hitting him, just, but not without all the drawers flying open and things crashing about all over the floor!
So, as the man in the film nearly said "We're going to need a bigger horn".
Here it is:

I fitted it in place of the previous upgrade, using the same bracket and the trumpet is fitted in a vertical position below. I am now able to give the three short blasts signifying that the ship is leaving harbour!

Careful Pete, three short blasts means you are about to go astern......thanks for the link! Is it easy to fit something like that please?Pete Taylor wrote:Well... even the air horn I fitted was not enough to stop a prat on a scooter pulling out in front of me from a side street, despite my warning toots; I had nowhere to go as a truck was coming the other way. Re: Mercedes Sprinter Horn
Best tell him how to do port and starboard signals as well Groundhog. :look here:just so if he is parked near a waterway he can cause confusion to local boats, although to be honest very few know these old rules. Even less actually use them sadly.
Its all chartplotters, radar and AIS these days.
