Re: thetford toilet
Another tip is to make sure the rest of your party are aware of when you have removed the cassette for emptying, otherwise you may find a nasty surprise awaiting you when you come back to replace it . . .

Oh, and don't forget to tell guests that there is a limit as to how much can go in there!
We had German friends staying in our caravan for four days and after they had left I went to India and my good lady discovered that the last couple of standing ovations were up in the bowl and the blade was open!
Thankfully, a mate of ours emptied everything out before I got home but there was a lingering smell in there for about six months!
Always remember that "Experience." is a weird teacher. It gives you the test first and the lesson afterwards.
Best regards,

Re: thetford toilet
update. Lipseal 16175.Almost impossible to fit wrong.Only the cut out to get right.
I dont know the difference between 33331 and 33361.Not marked on seal.
Cleaned and fitted seal .Light lubrication with olive oil.Might have to lubricate often,as they sell a spray for this purpose.
Think this is the best i can do.

I have found this chaps videos very very helpful. Did a full service on mine with his help inc changing valves and all-sorts. Runs as sweet as a Rolls Royce now (On my older caravan loo not new one in the AS).

Yes he explains the changing very carefully. However what i wanted to know was the difference in the seals.
However he confirms olive oil and the spray method.

Sorry mike, it wasn't for part numbers just as a general help post. I would never have sussed how to get the vent valve out (even with the instructions that came with it) without the video after which is was a quick easy job. AND the hidden screws under the slide guides for the seal cover.mikethebike wrote:Yes he explains the changing very carefully. However what i wanted to know was the difference in the seals.

Don't think the odour control was working in the fluid (If they had used any).Paulmold wrote:Whatever you do, don't let it get this full.....

Frank
While in France recently we noticed a distinct whiff of ammonia in the van, in fact even near the van after we'd been at a campsite for a couple of days without emptying.
We were mostly using the site toilets but using ours in the evening and night.
When I removed the cassette I found that the top of the cassette and the pockets for storage beneath it were full to the brim with, erm, wee.
Not a very nice job to clean it all out and disinfect/freshen.
I realised that the offending liquid must be finding its way past the lip seal and mentioned this to SWMBO. She asked me whether I used the loo with the flap open or closed and I replied that I used it "closed for No1s, to prevent it from splashing around in the contents and possibly disturbing something monstrous".
She then instructed me to use the loo with the flap open from then on, as it was apparent that my habit was filling the bowl which was then leaking past the worn lip seal.
We tested the theory with a bowl of fresh water and proved that this was the case.
We've since fitted a new seal but, as frequently happens when SWMBO appplies female logic to a male engineering concept, I'm converted to the new concept of leaving the flap open to do all "businesses".
If the gurgling and splashing wakes her up, then that's her look out - her snoring has the same effect on me after all.
So - Valve Open For Us (in capitals as it's a SWMBO rule now)

Re: thetford toilet
Just leave it half open for no1's and get the best of both worlds

I still think it's upside-down, back-to-front and inside-out; and that's always assuming that it's the right Part you have fitted!

Re: thetford toilet
Hi guys,
Just spent a most satisfying day servicing my Thetford toilet.
One important observation - the gauge in the toilet which normally shows green is NOT a cassette content level indicator - if you remove the cassette and look in the compartment you will observe a small cam up on the left hand side - when the cassette is inserted it presses the cam up which in turn changes the gauge in the toilet to indicate green - when the cassette is removed the cam drops down and causes the gauge in the toilet to indicate half red and half green. The purpose of the gauge appears to be to indicate whether the cassette is or is not in place.
Hope this helps.
Happy flushing.
Dave

Mine worked as you'd expect and it was pretty accurate, when it said it was full, it meant it!daveH wrote:Hi guys,

Re: thetford toilet
I was hoping to get away from this topic, days ago.
Yes Dave it does. But i filled mine with water and reinserted, and it reads full.
I cannot see any connection between the indicator and the contents.
I await the answer without going to the toilet,so be quick.
