thetford toilet
hi all,i was wondering how much water to chemical people put in their toilet.i have read come where its 3 litres of water and I'm sure I've also seen somewhere enough to cover the bottom of the tank. we use the 3litres method but feel it seems a lot of water in the tank before you've even used it.as always all response greatly appreciated.

Re: thetford toilet
As you use and flush the toilet, the fluid get diluted so I suppose it's academic anyway. If you put less water in to begin with you get a few extra flushes I suppose? I like to have the bottom of the tank covered.

3 litres does seem like an awful lot. Like boxerman, we use just enough to cover the bottom ( of the tank

Also meant to add we now use one bio liquid washing tab instead of the blue stuff.

Re: thetford toilet
Hi there,
"Three litres seems a lot." Hello?? Surely, three litres is three litres too much.
When it is full we empty the cassette, rinse it out, throw in two Formil Bio-Tablets and then use it as required.
Why I would want to waste three litres of water capacity in an already small cassette?
Best regards,

Re: thetford toilet
The instructions for the Thetford toilet in our caravan specifically said add sufficient water to cover the bottom of the tank. You then add the measured amount of blue (or green or whatever you use) chemical. The calibrations are probably in the lid you unscrew to empty it, otherwise the small bottles which fit into the casette compartment are calibrated up the side.
I wouldn't think you'd want to put the chemical in without it being diluted at all.

Re: thetford toilet
Funnily enough I was pondering this recently when I had to buy some more expensive "blue chemical "as i call it. "Spend a penny"- gotta be joking - "Spend a 50p" more like if you have to put 3 litres of water in for starters!
Then I thought can I use urine instead of water after all most of the content of the Thetford is No1's not No 2's and therefore just put a splash of water ie to cover the bottom.
And can someone enlighten me what are these "Bio tablets" and do they do the business but more cheaply?

Re: thetford toilet
Hi there,
Bio laundry tablets contain, amongst other things, enzymes and perfumes.
If they were left in the cassette long enough they would digest the contents; which is how they remove organic dirt from clothing.
They are MUCH cheaper than chemicals and in some places (especially on the Continent and wherever the site uses a septic tank) the use of standard toilet chemicals are banned if they contain formaldehyde.
Bio tablets are also much easier to transport, are available in every supermarket in the land and do a job that doesn't leave the eyes stinging with the chemical fumes that can occur with some standard toilet chemicals.
We also use liquid Formil concentrate in the flush tank for the same reasons.
Hope this helps.

Re: thetford toilet
We use Aqua-Kem neat, never, ever added any water at all. Never had any problems in 13 years and about 5 months use per year.
Why add water?????????????????????

Because the instructions tell you to? Ufortunately they don't say why.

I suspect it is to reduce the risk of getting the concentrated solution splashed on delicate body parts - ladies in particular.

Re: thetford toilet
Very nicely put Frank!
I expected it was because the chemical would eventually eat its way through the plastic . It is concentrated after all and concentrated stuff has to be diluted.
Nora
P.S. Just a thought - you would only get splashed if you had the valve thing open.

re thetford toilet
In my Thetford manual and I hope this doesn't sound to crude, but the water in the cassette is needed to prevent...wait for it...Pyramiding..

Re: thetford toilet
Hi there,
There's no need to be coy around Thetford toilets. It's a fact of life that they get filled and need emptying.
If we are in one place for the three days it takes to fill the cassette I give it a "shuggle" on day two.
When we are on the move it's not a problem. The movement acts like a macerator and emptying the cassette is a lot easier.
Best regards,

Re: thetford toilet
I don't. Maybe I should with this awful Fiamma toilet I've got at the moment as I have to close the lid to open the valve otherwise it can splash as the valve opens.boxerman wrote:I always open the valve before use, doesn't everybody?Traficlady wrote:P.S. I saw a suggestion somewhere that you should leave water in the pan, too, like you do at home. I don't do that either.
