Peugeot Boxer - headlight adjust switch warm
I have a 1998 Symphony on a Peugeot Boxer. I just noticed that the rotary headlamp adjustment switch, to the right of the rotary headlamp switch, is getting very warm at the top between numbers 2 and 1. It is noticeable, once the ignition switch has been on for about 5-10 mins.
Before I rip the dashboard apart, can any tell me what it's like on their vehicle?

Re: Peugeot Boxer - headlight adjust switch warm
Can't say that I've noticed on mine ('95) the adjuster isn't electric so I cannot think of what it might be giving off heat
Be interested in the results of you finding though

Hi Frank
The heat is not apparent until you actually put your finger in the right spot.

Re: Peugeot Boxer - headlight adjust switch warm
Would anyone with a Symphony mind popping out to your vehicle to see what yours does, ie with nothing electric switched on, switch the ignition on and see if the headlamp adjustment switch (to the right of the headlamp on/off switch) gets warm within 5-10 mins. If yours does too I'll forget about the issue, if it doesn't I need to book into the garage.
Thanks a lot

Re: Peugeot Boxer - headlight adjust switch warm
Just checked mine and although it does get slightly warm, it is not what I would call 'hot'.
When the ignition is on, the switch knob and the numbers are illuminated and I wonder if someone has replaced the bulb for a higher wattage than it should be.
(Don't ask me what it should be!)

I checked last night in the dark sure enough the switch is permanently illuminated regardless of any lights being on. That seems like an odd design fault to me. Is yours illuminated Nain?
I think I'll just take the bulb out!

Would be interested in the bulb wattage when you take it out.
Let us know.

Here's what it all looked like. The rightmost black part right of the draper trim removal tool is the rectangular blanking plate, the 2 small black dodas no idea but they fell out with the lamp holder. The small green thing is the bulb, I can't see a wattage on it, jut some writing I can't quite make out. Thanks for your help everyone.

Sounds like someone did put the wrong bulb in then. AS I've removed it and can't see what's written on it we shall never know ...

I bought a box of 10 for the heater controls, quite a bit ago. Might have been these:

But I couldn't be sure.

Marc,
Asides, have you checked to see whether your headlamp adjustment mechanism actually does anything? The mk1 Boxers had a hydraulic mechanism to control the headlamp height and mine failed within a year or so from new. I don't know of any which have lasted.
I think failure normally results I the lamps pointing fully up, but I'll stand corrected. Normal recover action is to ties the adjustment screw down to the headlamp body with a cable tie.

Mine works! I don't think that they are hydraulic though? I think it's just some sort of enclosed bowden cable mechanism? has anyone taken one apart to see what is inside? be interested to know as the parts list gives the 'switch', cables and ends as all one unit.Bartfarst wrote:Marc,

Frank,
On reflection I think you're right: cancel my last message!
I think I still have a set somewhere waiting to be thrown away - I'll dismantle them first and let you know.

Re: Peugeot Boxer - headlight adjust switch warm
Mine ARE hydraulic - one works and one doesn't!! I dismantled the one that doesn't work and some red hydraulic fluid came out of the flexible line that goes from the switch to the lamp unit. They work just like a hydraulic brake - as you turn the switch it tries to compress the fluid in the tube. Because the fluid is virtually incompressible, the fluid causes the piston in the lamp unit to rotate the lamp unit on its pivot. The lights point at their highest without any hydraulic pressure, as Stuart says. So I leave both my lights pointing at their highest; this seems to be fine for the loading in the van. Whilst I like things to work properly, this fix is not high on the priority list!

No, I haven't, as the van i always pretty evenly loaded, I've not seen the point of it.
