T4 Trident petrol vs diesel?
Hi,
Can you advise me on the pros and cons of a petrol vs diesel Trident T4. My understanding is that diesel engines last longer. But is that the only advantage?
Still looking for a T4 Trident to go to France in this summer, and have as a main vehicle, if anyone knows of any good ones!
Thanks very much
Holly

Yes, all other things being equal a diesel is built more strongly and ~should~ last longer.
However, given that your location is stated as London, surely the overriding consideration is the different rule for the LEZ, diesel vs petrol? There are a few factors to account for, but I can't see many people located in/near London wanting a diesel unless it's recent (i.e. more recent than the majority of T4s).

yep, good point, but a re-plating is possible. Or a move from London!
Im just wondering if there are any other down sides to having a petrol.

Re: T4 Trident petrol vs diesel?
Hi there,
The benefits of diesel over petrol are:
"Cost of petrol." The UK is one of the very few countries that makes diesel more expensive than petrol.
"Miles per gallon." A diesel engine traditionally returns up to 10% better miles per gallon than a petrol engine.
"Things that can go wrong." A diesel engine doesn't have the electrical ignition system that a petrol engine has so it has less things to go wrong.
Hope this helps.
Best regards,
PS
The down-side is that governments are now legislating to bar older diesel driven vehicles from many city centres to reduce particulate emissions!

On the other hand, Petrol engines are like for like i.e. size, normal aspirated or turbo, and age:
Quieter
Smoother
More powerful
Have cleaner emmissions
Ignition systems are not usually a problem despite what some say.
The older diesel injection pump, if it goes wrong can be horribly expensive to repair or replace.
The new common rail, turbocharged diesel engines are marvelous, but probably out of the price range you quoted in an earlier post.
Longevity. How long do you want it to last? Commercial engines are designed to be run all day, every day. Either petrol or diesel will probably outlast the rest of the van.

These are very expensive options. They outway any advantage of longer life of a diesel engine.hollysheldon wrote:yep, good point, but a re-plating is possible. Or a move from London!

I agree with Frank.
