Hi Plynch2002.
I had the same problem with my 1999 Peugeot Boxer Symbol. Sometimes it would spark up on ignition and other times absolutely nothing. Lost power or little power. Used a LOT of fuel and as a 'new to us' van we didn't realise how thirsty it was.
Turned out to be computer on fuel injection + decoking £500 at local garage.

If it was a faulty ECU, there would be a warning light on all the time the ignition was switched on.

I never had a fault light display, Boxerman
Someone on another forum even recommended taking petrol cap off to release a possible fuel air block which, of course, didn't work.

Re: Still chugging peugot boxer 1996 petrol
My ECU could not be repaired so I needed a new exchange one - £467:64 (in 2004) that was just for the ECU, it was a further £88:13 for the diagnostics & fitting. Total of £555:17. If you got a new or replacement ECU and a decoke (6.2 hours @ £??? per hour to remove and refit the cylinder head, plus a couple of hours cleaning & grinding valves plus new gaskets etc..) for £500, then you got a bargain
If your van was running, it meant that the ECU was doing something rather than being absolutly dead. Sounds like it was in limp mode like mine was, 40mph max, clouds of black smoke and using petrol like it was going out of fashon. So it should have put out an error code to ECU fault warning light on the dash.
It should light up when you switch the ignition on and go out when you start the engine does it? (I don't mean the oil light).

If you can't get a speedo cable, try here:
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
They don't list the boxer but they may make one up for you.
Are you sure its the cable and not the drive at the gearbox end? There is a speed sensor where the cable attaches which sends info to the ECU. Perhaps this could be the problem? or part of it.

Hi.
Which is the ECU fault light - is it the solid red square with no picture on it?
I have the owners manual for the van but the pages that show the dash lights and what they mean are missing!

Seriously?
At least Ford and VW have the design sense to have a dash warning light showing an engine with a bolt of lightning going through it! I can just imagine the design team saying "yes, but that light won't come on very often, so if we don't pay extra to have any useful information etched on it we can save 0.33 Euros per vehicle!"
