Sink mixer tap in talbot symphony L reg

the cold water tap has lost its 'bite' and just rotates endlessly. autosleeper tell me there may be a problem because any available replacement may stand proud and not allow the sink cover to close fully - not much use! I would welcome any ideas - I am elderly and no longer able to DIY.
