FREEDOM CAMPING OFF ROAD IN NZ
Are there any kiwis out there, that have an auto sleeper - a county model like a Glouster or a Worcester etc. I would like to know how they fare on metal/gravel roads getting into DOC parks etc.

Re: FREEDOM CAMPING OFF ROAD IN NZ
Hi tikiti,
We have hired motorhomes a couple of times on our trips to NZ, our son lives in Browns Bay so we pop over every couple of years or so.
The last time 4 years ago, from Wilderness Motorhomes in Auckland and did the trip up from Christchurch back to Auckland. This was in one of their panel vans 6.5m long with the X250 chassis.
Other than being a bit cautious on some of the gravel roads especially when meeting a grader/roadsweeper truck head on, miles from nowhere(!!), accessing any of the Doc sites had no problems. If that helps!
Does your van have special features that may make some of the terrain a bit difficult?
We have travelled most of both islands in motorhomes, with out any problems other than high winds getting under the overcab once or twice, making the steering very interesting! Oh and closing the cooker lid when the gas rings were still warm!! Fortunately no one was in the van at the time

Re: Freedom Camping in Nz
Hi Tikiti, welcome to the club. We have Sigma front wheel drive north of Auckland. Never had any problems on metalled roads or Doc sites but did get stuck on a road works site where deep loose metal had not been rolled. Towed out by grader to amusement of road gang. Have been caught out a couple of times on wet grass though, one occasion on level ground!

Next time we are in Auckland, as one of our sons is in Browns Bay, we will give you both a call and maybe meet up for a flat white or something even more exotic
