MPG for VW Topaz
Hi,
Can anyone tell me what kind of mpg I could expect of my !996 VW Topaz, diesel, 2.4 engine?
I'm using it for round town trips at the moment but we shall be off on more extended driving just as soon as the weather improves.

Hi there,
I'm afraid that this is a "how long is a piece of string" question!
Apart from vehicle and engine design fuel consumption is massively affected by:
o top speed,
o acceleration and deceleration,
o weight carried,
o driving conditions,
o vehicle maintenance and
o grade/type of fuel.
As you are using the vehicle around town at the moment I suggest that you fill the tank to the top, note down the mileage and then after a hundred miles or so re-fill the tank and check what you have achieved on the MPG calculation.
After that the challenge is "Self Improvement" to see if you can better that figure! (In order of magnitude the top three users of fuel under your immediate control are 1. Top Speed. 2. Acceleration/deceleration. 3. Weight.)
Enjoy.
Best regards,

We usually average about 32 mpg on long trips.
