Alarm / Immobilser as standard?
Hi Everyone,
I have just purchased an Autosleeper Peugeot Symbol (04 ) mwb 2.0 Deisal. I never checked whether it had an alarm/immob fitted before I 'did the deal'. I asked afterwards and was told there was no alarm fitted. What I would like to know is whether an immobiliser would have been fitted as standard? I am picking it up in a couple of weeks time so cannot check anything at present. I am concerned that the insurance will cost a fair bit without the above let alone the security aspect. This is my/our first foray into the 'motorhome' world and no doubt we will make plenty more 'mistakes' along the way! I appreciate I can get something fitted ( more expense ) so any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any help given!

Hi,
Your van should have an immobiliser fitted as standard. the best alarm is a Strikeback, other types are available

Hi
My Symbol was second hand when I bought it came with a Sigma S30 alarm. I thought one of the previous owners had it fitted did'nt realised they came as standard.

Re: Alarm / Immobilser as standard?
Just had an Autowatch 695 alarm fitted to our nearly a year old Symbol (Its got Can-Bus electrics - whatever that means), for £300.
We have one key that has a remote for the central locking, which now also works the alarm. The other key was just that so we have a remote to go with it to work the alarm and central locking.
Our previous Motorhome on a Fiat Chassis was broken into on the drive, and the radio stolen I think they must have expected to find more things worth taking. They damaged the drivers lock and I was quoted £600 for all the locks to be replaced by a Fiat dealer. So we had an alarm fitted that also centrally locked the van for less than half that and disabled the original lock.

Hi Stewart,
Thanks for the info, it will be intersting to see what it has got, although from what you say it should have an alarm. I notice from your avatar if that is your Autosleeper that we have the same or very similar, what year is yours?
Thanks again!
Nigel

All the Boxers supplied by AS had the standard Pugeot/Fiat immobiliser fitted. If there is an alarm fitted it was either fitted as an extra at new or fitted after the sale at sometime in its life.

Hi Stewart, mine is also 04 but is 2.0. I imagine the extra 200cc you have makes alot of difference. Cannot wait to get it and go off for a weekend to try it out etc What sort of mpg do you get even though you have a diff engine size? Also what should I expect to pay approx in insurance?
Thanks
Thanks

Hi Troikafloyd
If I keep my speed between 55-60 I get around 34 mpg but speeds between 70-75 it go's down to around 27 mpg.
At the moment I have LV Highway Motorhome insurance fully comp with 4years NCB £198.00 and mileage limit of 5000 miles.
I go through brokers [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] . The policy is not the greatest of cover with no European cover, no key replacement etc best to read the policy.

Hi Stewart,
Thanks for the useful info, I'm not heavy footed regarding speed, who can afford to be these days! The mpg is a bit better than I thought it would be, also the insurance is good, I won't be going abroad (not for a few years) although I might do a bit more mileage as it might be my only transport although not quite sure on that one yet.
Thanks as usual!

As Stewart says, you need to be careful. Some insurance companies will only cover you if the motorhome is a second vehicle. I'm like you in that our van is our only transport.
I pay around £350 and get European cover plus RAC breakdown with Comfort Insurance. Older van though.

Re: Alarm / Immobilser as standard?
Mine is also my only vehicle now, so the mileage is higher, but when I checked the policy although it states 8000 miles if you do more it is only the excess that goes up.
There is a sliding scale, so the more over the 8000 you do the more excess you pay.
Makes sense really, as I suppose the base costs of insurance are the same, but the more you drive the more chance you have of needing to make a claim, although reading on here most problems seem to be things stolen whilst on peoples drives.

I had a Sigma S30 fitted to my Harmony as an 'extra' when I purchased it new.
The base vehicle didn't have either an alarm or immobiliser fitted as standard.
