Battery light Empty Battery light

I have a Peugeot boxer 2004 and the battery light has come on on the dashboard. I have got mains plug in but the habitation battery is not charging can anyone tell me why?

Under what circumstances does the dash battery warning lamp come on? When the engine is running? When the engine is off and the key out of the ignition? If the latter, was it on during the drive to wherever you are now?
