Audio description gone mad
I have an Avtex pro TV. It’s worked really well for 5 years, no problems. Suddenly, the other night, without warning, it started to give audio descriptions. The type that go “Sally walks across an empty road and is waiting at the bus stop” etc. when there is action without script on the tv.
It’s never done it before and it started doing it halfway through the evening! I looked in the settings, found audio description on/off. It was set to off, but still doing it. I switched it to on and off, no change. I found the audio description volume, so I cleverly changed that to zero. It carried on doing it.
So, has anyone else has this and if so, did you manage to resolve it? I’ve tried over 2 nights to no avail. It may just be broken and I might have to buy a new one, but I don’t want to miss anything before I do.
Thanks in advance

It will be a simple setting, I’ve no idea which but hold off buying a new TV for now!

Just wondering (as you've tried the obvious without success)...... is the TV one which can accept software updates? If so, you might try to download the latest software.
Is the battery in the remote up to correct voltage still? Otherwise it might affect a keystroke.

The trouble is I tried the obvious simple setting (audio description on/off and volume and it made no difference. You’re right about holding off on the new telly, that’s the last resort.Dbvwt wrote:It will be a simple setting, I’ve no idea which but hold off buying a new TV for now!

I’ll look into both of those, thank you. It’s a few weeks until I’m away again so I have time to try things.Cymro wrote:Just wondering (as you've tried the obvious without success)...... is the TV one which can accept software updates? If so, you might try to download the latest software.

Have you tried unplugging the power and leaving for a while then reconnecting?
Sometimes this will reset things.

Yes, I did the switch off for a bit, then switch off for a lot longer. Then retune. Then left overnight. All exactly the same.rogerblack wrote:Have you tried unplugging the power and leaving for a while then reconnecting?

I’ve just realised that for the first time ever I was running a coax cable from the post to the telly, as there was no signal. Could that have made a difference?

Failing that, there is usually a ‘reset all settings to default’ somewhere in the menu system. I’ve got a 3 year old Avtex and as much as I love the TV, I find the menu settings a bit obscure at times.
I can have a play with mine over the next couple of days if it may help.

Out of interest, what is that mode? I’m not even sure the OP has the same menus.

I think mine may be different menus. But I’ll check them and I’ll see if I can Google factory reset etc. As you say, if that doesn’t work then goodness knows.
It will be a few weeks now before I’m back at the van (it’s in storage), but I’ll definitely try this so thank you for checking it out, I appreciate the help.

Good luck, the menu screens are ‘hidden’ unless the correct procedure is entered, I’d never seen them before I started investigating today.

I have contacted Avtex for several issues over the years and have always found them most helpful and patient … incase other advise doesn’t resolve your problem.

Had the same thing happen to one of our Avtex tv’s in the past, can’t remember if I found the setting in the menu or did a full reset as it was sometime ago…

Each to their own but I wouldn’t say Cello TV’s are a lot better than Avtex Ian… for starters Cello is a budget brand & Avtex is a premium brand. We recently sold a small 12v Cello tv that we inherited & it was absolutely awful, have never heard a tv with such abysmal sound quality, it actually hurt my ears as it was so tinny sounding.

Each to own CC! Mine works fine and when no signal or language we can understand, the built in dvd does very well. And about 1/3 of the price!!

Re: Audio description gone mad
Cello TV’s have great reviews on here and on another forum that I’ve previously been on and I’ve no reason to doubt that they are great value and definitely worth considering.
What does wind me up a tad however is when I read that Avtex TV’s are rubbish and not worth the money. After buying a cheap supermarket 12v TV 10 years ago which was fine but lasted just over a year, I’ve had Avtex ever since.
Ok, they have their gremlins like every other modern gadget but I can’t fault them and will buy another when the time comes.
For info, my old one is in my loft and still fully works, I just fancied a new model!

Just as a quick update, just back from my latest trip and the TV works fine. I didnt do anything or reset anything, so goodness knows what that was all about.
So thank you to everyone who offered advice, even if it wasn’t needed this time; I’m prepared for if it happens again.

Re: Audio description gone mad
We had this audio randomly start up again on our last trip, in the menu there is a setting noted as ‘AD’ obviously short for Audio Description, toggled it off & it went away, so probably a bug in the software that occasionally enables this setting, not sure when the last OTA update was, it seems Avtex rarely if ever release them…

Re: Audio description gone mad
On The Cello debate, just bought a 14 inch for the kitchen at home and I am impressed, good sound (for a small tv) good picture quality from any angle.
back up battery (don't know why) stubby Ariel in the box, £99.00 free delivery within two days direct from Cello.
seriously considering a 22 inch internet ready unit for in the van at around £200
