Going away for the New Year? Empty Going away for the New Year?

We normally go to our barge in Belgium for New Year, for a bit of peace after the traditional full-house Christmas at home with offspring and grandchildren (we always ended up sleeping in the caravan on the drive, now of course it will be in the van). For Schengen 90/180 reasons we are going to stay in the UK this time since we are off to Norway a bit later in January, so we are thinking of a nice town in the Yorkshire Dales which seems ideal: lots of good wild laybys up on the fells, good chippy and a Farmers' Auction site just out of town that seems to offer a water tap, black disposal and modestly priced overnight parking in town if we want it. Perfect? Anybody got any comments? Can you guess which town? Last time we did a UK New Year with the caravan during lock down we had a quiet time and some good walking at Ingleton.

Hawes I would think ? … Ingleton’s a nice place, Bernie’s Cafe and Marton Arms both good.

Yep, Hawes is the plan, unless we get waylaid elsewhere. It has seemed like a nice place on previous quick visits so perhaps time to have a proper look around.

I’d also recommend the station Inn by Ribblehead viaduct

Take the little bus to Aysgarth Falls, much more exciting than riding a roller coaster.

Another good route is to take a bus from Pickering to Whitby which is seriously good. It runs through Goathland / Aidensfield (Heartbeat town with adjacent steam train station) past Filingdales international spy station up and down roads that I would hesitate to ride my motorbike along. Amazing skill of the bus driver, and when we went there was a commentary over the bus PA system. It was a regular bus service with buss pass, not a special service. The commentary said it is one of the top seven bus trips you can take in England.

Thanks for all the comments. Looking at the weather forecasts and the likely border problems at the Channel I suspect we may have made the right decision to go to N.Yorkshire this New Year instead of Belgium, but the recent tragedy at Glaisdale is very sad. We know the Goathland/Whitby area pretty well so will probably keep west, perhaps loop across to the Lakes for a day after visiting Hawes area, but I think this is a New Year for the high ground and caution! Definitely no caves or fords, probably no water falls!

Happy New Year to all, and many thanks to all those who have helped with good advice over the first year with our motorhome.
